Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone. I was diagnosed Type 2 a few months ago. A couple of weeks ago I had to change my GP practice. My new GP and Nurse want me tested for Diabetes all over again and have stopped my Metformin until then. Is this usual?

I've never heard of this. Maybe your records have gone missing? Shouldn't happen in this age of computerisation, but you never know. Best ask for the reason next time you go.

Sounds a bit odd. Do you have any information regarding your blood sugar levels (either HBA1c or spot checks) from your original GP?

If you have those, then your new GP should be able to judge based on those.

Do you have a meter for personal testing? Whilst you are off the metformin it would be useful to see what's happening.

Hopefully, things will get settled soon (and even more hopefully you get some good news!!).

Andy 🙂

they might have looked at your records and suspect you may be T1 or LADA not T2 or that you're IFG or IGT instead of T2.
It all depends what tests they want you to have. What test has been proposed - OGTT, GAD antibodies, C-Peptide ?
How old are you and how much overweight are you ( if any ) ?

I would be chuffed they are looking at things for you. Let us know what they say. 2 test are better than 1

Welcome Rosey.

Actually, it's very encouraging that your new GP practice wants to investigate you properly - a repeat test, after a few weeks on metformin (and perhaps a reduction in body weight, through chenge of diet and increased physical activity, although you don't mention this?) may result in a modified diagnosis. You may be able to continue on diet or exercise only, or you may have type 1 diebetes (which tends to develop more slowly in adults than children), LADA or MODY.

As mcdonagh47 says, it depends on what type of test is being proposed eg fasting blood glucose levels, OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test - 2 blood tests, 1 fasting, then another 2 hours after drinking a fixed amount of glucose) HbA1c (gives average measure of blood glucose over past few weeks), GAD antibodies / C-peptides (to decide between type 1 / LADA / type 2 etc). IGT = Impaired Glucose Tolerance; IFG = Impaired Fasting Glucose, by the way.
