Hi Deborah, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear that you are having problems. It is often a sign that levels are running too high generally if you begin to problems focussing - this is generally temporary as long as you can get your levels back closer to normal range. Many of us on here believe your nurse is wrong in saying that you do not need to test. If it is something that will help you understand and control your diabetes then you should be provided with the education and tools to do so. Unfortunately, a lot of surgeries are trying to save costs by refusing to supply test strips on prescription unless you are on insulin or other medications that may cause low blood sugars. They say that the checks you get periodically at the surgery will provide the information you need, but as you say how can it when, if it is bad, you don't know where you might be going wrong?

Some of our members who have been refused strips buy some themselves for a while, then go back to their nurse or doctor to show them how it is helping them with their diabetes control. Whilst not ideal, and not everyone can afford to do this, it can make your argument much stronger.

I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter in order to get a good understanding of your diabetes and how to approach it. The more you understand, the better you will be able to argue your case. If you have any questions there will always be someone here who can help out, so please ask! 🙂

hi Deborah.... welcome to the forum 🙂

I can't add anything to what Northerner says but I just wanted to welcome you. hope you get things sorted out soon. good luck with the appointment in 2 weeks time 🙂

Hi

Hi

I can't add anything to this either, but I am recently diagnosed (8 weeks ago now) and I am having similar problems...

I was scared and confused when first diagnosed as well but have found this forum and the people in it very helpful and suportive...

It's great to have someone/somewhere to go to when you need it!

Good luck!

Hi Deborah,

I was diagnosed with Type 2 6 years ago and was also told at the time no need to test BG and I just accepted it. Now I'm on insulin.

I didn't take my initial diagnois seriously enough and I think that in part was due to the fact that I had nothing to tell me I was having any problems, had I seen the effect the can of full fat Coke was having or why a whole packet of Haribo's wasn't a good idea maybe my pancreas would have lasted a bit longer (Haribos are too good to share though!) I didn't look for any real information until I got a bunch of needles and had to start injecting myself, along with the meter that really showed me how bad my body is at dealing with sugar!

I wish I'd found this forum 6 years ago and "maybe" things would be different now. I think by joining the forum and seeking out help and advice you stand a great chance of getting on top of things.

Hopefully you can get your nurse to see the value in you testing for your longer term health. Good luck.
