Hi! I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 around 18 mths ago and after a long spell in denial I am now finally accepting the condition and adressing all my weight and dietary issues. He lies the confusion - there are so many conflictions on various websites that I am not sure I am pursuing the correct course of action. My main concern is Carbs - the main composition of sugars/starch come from Carbs so I am adopting a low carb diet which should reduce my sugar levels and help with weight loss. However I read other articles which say I should adopt a sensible diet which includes bread -fruit - pasta - rice (all items rich in carbs) and I am encoraged to particularly eat plenty of fruit. Fruit is naturally blessed with sugar and a healthy fruit laden meal sent my sugar levels into orbit. I appreciate that everyone is different but what should I be doing - educating carbs (suggested to 65 to 70g/meal) or continue to eat a balanced diet with lots of breads and fruits which appears contradictary. I am desperate to follow the right path - help!!!!

hi and a warm welcome firstly bigmopotz

I would just like to say alot of websites tell us diffirent things conflicting and otherwise it is always diffucult to follow what they say as its such a confusion , do you have a good diabetic health team?? and are you on pills, insulin or diet alone? they are a few threads around that concern carbs etc etc they might help you in the right direction

Not surprised you are confused. There's a lot of it about. Rather than "diet x" or "diet y" hows about using a meter to work out what works for you personally?

There's one thing to remember though. Whichever path you take, you still need to get all the essential nutrients although as you have found with fruit, the foods which are highest in some of those nutrients are also cause a problem to BG. But there are always other sources.

Anyway, just as a suggestion, have a read of this and see if you think it would help you to work out what works for you personally:

Hiya

Unfortunately what is right for one might not be right for another - it's not a one size fits all disease! I've recently bought Gretchen Baker's book - Type 2 diabetes the first year - about ?6.50 from Amazon which has been a great help. Its all about finding out what is right for you and what works for you.

Good luck and if you want to know wanything - just ask away.

I definatly agree with the testing advice, work out how foods effect you.

I for example can eat fruit and cover with my insulin but can not drink fruit juice. I can eat bread/rice etc and predict the effects but pasta and porridge send my blood sugar levels crazy.

They are huge debates over whether diabetics should or shouldnt eat carbs. I can completely see the logic in cutting them out, but i love them too much to have decided to learn to to live with them instead 🙂

Dont expect to have perfect readings straight away, diabetes (type 1 or 2) involves lots of trial and error.

Good luck xx

Hi Bigmopotz,

Welcome to the forum Bigmopotz! If you have a search through some of the threads (use the search option on the top bar) you will find some experiences and discussion on diets (something the majority of us seem to have either had conflict or opinion on!) and we have lots of differences in the advice we have been given. Its a very difficult subject at times, especially trying to balance our carbohydrate inatke against medications. It may be beneficial to you to request a dietician referal. I went to the dietician at my Diabetes Clinic, she was very helpful (I wasnt impressed by the plastic food demonstration but there you go!).

I hope you find whats right for you and again, welcome and good luck! x
