hi everyone i had my first nurse check today and im confused now as she has told me to keep the sugars down but how do i know if they are high if i have no way of checking?

Steffie, it's a dilemma and a very common story that we are told this and then denied the means of ensuring it :( You can get a free meter from here:

Don't give up hope of getting some strips prescribed, have a read of the following and then go back to your doctor and let them know that you would feel more in control if you were able to measure your blood sugar levels and determine how the diet and lifestyle modifications you are making are affecting you:

Sometimes I wonder if they assume that we all have some form of ESP to detect our blood glucose levels without the need for meters 🙂

I would hate to assume that they were just giving advice by rote without actually considering what it meant.

Oh steff that's a bit difficult isn't it? Mind reading perhaps 😉 or trying to get some test strips for your doctor. I am trying to test just twice a day to see how it goes and things seems to ok at the moment. I really hope you can get some test strips. Sheena x ps,when did you change your user name ?
