Hi, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 18 months ago and have seen a diabetic nurse once. I was told I did not need to monitor my levels as would get a check up every 6 months, however I bought a monitor and am more confused as I have a high read of 11 every morning and this fluctuated between 9 and 14 throughout the day. Am not sure what it should be. Would be grateful for any advice.

Trish, it's good that you're home testing. Official guidelines are below 7 fasting (before breakfast) and no more than 8.5 two hours after a meal. Your levels are running a little high. Are you on any meds and have you reduced carbs and tried to up your exercise levels (if you're able).

Any idea what your Hba1c levels are which the surgery does every 6 months?

Hi Amigo, I am on Metformin 500 x 2 have tried to reduce carbs but only do moderate exercise. My last Hba1c was 49.
I have found that if I eat very little my levels can go to about 6-7.

Hi Trisha, I am was diagnosed type 2 beginning of August. I am new to all this. I self monitor twice daily and take Metformin and Gliclazide. When you got your Self Monitor, was there some Glucose Control Solution, If there was put some on a Blood Glucose Test Strip take a reading. Just to make sure your monitor is working correctly, before you self monitor. My readings go down to 4 Before breakfast and up to 9.7 before Dinner. If my readings were as high as yours, I wouldn't be feeling very well . Best check your monitor and yourself. Good Luck clive55555

Thank you clive. No Glucose Control Solution with monitor. Just taken a read of 7.5 5 hours after eating but was 10.5 before breakfast. It seems that my levels only reduce if I dont eat much.

Are you drinking two litres of water per Day and Night ? Clive55555

Can you give an idea of an average day's food intake Trisha. Would give an idea of what you may be doing wrong. Your Hba1c isn't too bad though.

Hello Trisha.
What self testing allows you to do is see what effect different food and meals have. What are your readings before and after eating.
Start with whatever makes the biggest difference.
It's mainly carbohydrates that you've to manage as far as I know. That's bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, brackfast cerial.

Drink water when I'm at work but tend to drink coffee and diet coke at home.
Usually have one slice of toast for breakfast a ham or cheese sandwich for lunch and chicken or beef and vegetables with a few new potatoes at tea time.
I very rarely exercise.

So by eating that you'd be between 9-14 during the day? Nothing else at all in between?
Certainly if I ate that, my levels wouldn't go much over 7.8 and I'm not on medication but if it was white bread and particularly a large bun or baguette, it would push me further.
Try to rise no more than 2-3 after meals. It sounds like you have the Dawn Phenomenon which would explain being higher on a morning. Do you have supper?

Trisha...wondering how long you've been testing your blood glucose levels for...and how much information you have about the benefits of testing...what to look for...how to interpret those results...obviously none came from your surgery since you were advised no need to test...rely on the HbA1c test every six months...disappointing many of us here have been given the same advice...fortunately most type 2s here have ignored that...tested regularly...your levels are high...but...with some adjustments I'm sure you can reduce those.. you probably know we need to avoid foods that are carb heavy...as well as the obvious ones...like white bread (some wholemeal too)...rice...pasta...sugars...there are others that are less obvious..some.fruits...vegetables...oils...was the diabetic nurse any help with dietary advice?...there is a wealth of information on the forum about diet & exercise...several threads...'What did you eat yesterday'...'The New24/7 Shop'...those will give some idea of what is suitable to keep your BGs in range...but...the best indicator is your meter...testing regularly will give you the results instantly...as for exercise...I walk as much as I can...anything you can do will be of benefit...even a ten minute walk...if you can answer some of the questions above...it would help members offer the right suggestions/advice...good luck...keep us updated.

Thank you for all the information. I have only been testing for 6 months and I don't test every day. I don't have supper as I usually have a meal around 6. Last night my read was 7.6 and this morning it was 10. What is dawn syndrome?

Hi Bubbsie - as a very experienced poster I thought I would ask what oils you mean. I use rapeseed and olive oil and assumed they were OK.

Hi Mazz...I tend to stick to olive oils mainly...and avoid all vegetable oils...although some here tolerate rapeseed fairly well... that does spike me a little...what we can tolerate is such an individual thing...the only way to be sure is to test before & after.
