Hi Guy's.
I've just joined the forum and would like to know if anyone has had trouble with Metformin or Gliclazide. I was on Metformin after being diagnosed about 2 years ago. then the doc put me on Gliclazide as well. Like many of you i was getting depressed and asking why me? I seemed to get stomach cramps after a while with Metformin so the doc put me on Gliclazide only but upped the dose to 11/2 in the morning. This did'nt drop my sugars so they upped the dose again to an extra 1 at night. I'm getting up every night with pain because my bladders full and went to the docs again this week. he upped the dose again to 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I'm convinced that these tablets are making me have the cramps even though the doc says me bladders full and hurting because of poor sugar control. I've stopped the tablets altogether today because i've just had enough of stomach ache even though its still there and trying to sort out a decent diet i find is a nightmare. can i have this or should i have that bbbbbllllllllooooooddddddyyyy hell!

Hi KarateKid.

Welcome to the forum, as a type1 i can't help much, but i'm pretty sure the others on here can. I hope your feeling better soon

xx

welcome to the forum ....this sounds very nasty and uncomfortable there are a few T2 on here who have experienced problems like this and im sure they'll be on soon with advice ....in the meantime have a good look around and remember no question is silly here....what are you BS levels like ?

Hi there karate and firstly welcome to the forum. Im on the same pills as you , gliclazide for a week now and metformin for 9 month, i cant go into a detailed answer now cause i have to go but i will be back on later ok .

Hi stef, i do hope you can shed some light on my situation as i am really getting confused about what i should and should'nt do. my names Mick i'll be on later as i'm teaching until half nine. i just can't seem to get the better of this which is unusual for me.
Regards Mick

Hi am64
My names Mick, Bloods are 9-12 in the morning i've stopped eating after about 7-00-oclock and drinking plenty of water but they've only gone down to 8 unfortunately i' cant seem to get the hang of this and i'm not keen on taking more tablets if i think they are causing the problem. Its nice to know there's someone that may be able to help Many thanks

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum.

What are your BG's? If they are high that would be the most likely cause of having a full bladder at night and if you don't wake up straight away to go to the loo you may well wake up with stomach pains because of the length of time you have retained the urine.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, your Doctor is most likely right and within a few weeks of taking the Gliclazide at the higher dose you should notice that you need to go to the loo less frequently.

Hi Karatekid and welcome to the forum.

I take metformin and gliclizide with no problems. When I first had the metformin I got realy well aquainted with the loo, but those symptoms subsided. I now only need to go urgently if I have had too many carbs or too much sugar.

If you have a meter it might help you see a pattern if you keep track of what the sugar levels are like, and keeping a diary will reveal any trneds there may be.

Do you sometimes feel you need to visit the loo in te middle of the night? I find if I don't get up and go I have all kinds of problems next day.

If the symptoms don't subside see your doctor. Slow release or liquid metformin works better for some people.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Mick, welcome to the forum🙂 Meds that make you feel worse really suck. I don't have any experience of those meds, so can't advise directly. What sort of meals do you have? Maybe if you can look into lower carb or lower GI meals your problems will reduce - I know that a lot of Type2s on medication find the side-effects worse if they have carby meals and that reducing carbs can help with the reactions. Changes in medication can also take some time to settle in. I was about 12 months before I stopped having to go to the loo during the night, even though my levels weren't high.

Hi Karate Kid.

I do have some problems with Metformin, every time the doctor increases the dosage I get plumbing problems, including a very sore stomach. I couldn't tolerate the Gliclazide at all and was getting hypos so the doc took me off it. Sadly, Metformin on it's own doesn't seem to be doing the job and my numbers are up again. It's only been six months and I'm trying to be patient but it's hard.

I understand there are options like a slow-release Metformin, maybe you should ask your doctor about that, it might help.

Hi there Mick sorry about earlier with it being half term i dont get a moments peace lol, anyways i cant really say alot of glitlizide at the moment as i have only been on it for 7 days, im on a small dose and for now they seem ok, as for the metformin that gave me terrible trouble and i actually came off it for about 2 weeks told no one and then realised after coming on here and telling people they made me stand up and think im being silly i must go to the docs, i did and he put me on liquid metformin i dont think it is largley common but i wonder if that might be better for you it is for me , but i still do get alot more hypers then i really should be getting, if they is an option for you i would certainly say as alison did ask about sr metformin that might settle things for you.Hope you get something sorted sooner rather then later theres nothing worse then bring on medincation that you actually feel is making you feel worse

good luck.

Hi Mick, i was diagnosed last month and take metformin 500mg twice daily. After having cramps and dashing to the loo for 4 days all seems to be going ok with these tablets now. I have really controlled my diet which i know has benefitted me greatly though i miss chocolate terribly sometimes (too tempting to have 2 chunks!)

My mother had terrible problems with metformin so her GP switched her to the slow release tablets and she says she feels much better on these...worth you asking to change.

Try drinking more water and ask GP to rule out a urinary infection as this might also cause problems.

There are a multitude of tablets available .....might just be a case of switching them around a bit.

Good luck

Mick, stomach aches, cramps and diahorrea are notorious with metformin and other diabetes drugs. It could be you're right, but on the other hand, your doctor could be right too.
As various people have already said, there's a whole load of different oral treatments for type 2 diabetes out there, it's just a matter of finding the one that doesn't dissagree with you.
Steff's suggestion that you could try liquid meformin is good, it is (or at least, should be) availible everywhere but is rather expensive. There's also a slow release formulation tablet called Glucophage that's often given to people who can't tollerate regular metformin.

Hope you have some joy finding a solution

Rachel

Hi guy's,
I should have said i was on ordinary release and slow release Metformin nothing seemed to change until i asked the doctor to drop the Metformin altogether and just carry on with the gliclazide. It was working ok but now i have the same symptoms with just the Gliclazide. So i don't want to take extra tabs as the doc suggested if i'm going to be in pain for hour after hour. As i said i have'nt taken any tablets today and i know i should'nt stop them myself but at least the pain has subsided. I teach martial arts for a living and have just taken my bloods after a class just to see the results and what effect exercise and no tablets have. to my surprise my bloods were 6.5 and that's with no pills I'm confused very confused. i just can't seem to get the hang of this, I did a training session with my own instructor last week and started shaking half way through so had to stop and take a glucose tab. that stopped the shaking but left me feeling energy depleted Going on the Desmond Project but can.t get in until April
Mick.

Hi Mick, as suggested earlier i really would ask the Gp to make sure you don't have a urine infection.....would make you feel pretty rough.

are you peeing ok at night?
