Hello Dawn, and welcome 🙂
As Drummer says, the fruit is the thing to cut down on to keep diabetes at bay - especially, cut out all fruit juice, fruit smoothies, fruit drinks, and dried fruit, and cut down on exotic fruit. Try to keep to no more than 1 or 2 pieces of fruit a day, and to keep to mostly apples, pears, and berries. The rest of your 5 (or more) a day should be salad and veg rather than fruit.
Leafy veg which grows above ground is good for people with diabetes; starchy veg which grows below ground less so, so try to cut down on things like potatoes and parsnips and fill up on things like cauliflower and brocoli instead.
Dairy is good, so in order to put some more weight on, have as much in the way of things like cheese, butter, cream, and full fat yogurt as you can! Nuts are also good, and nut butters might help you put weight on too. Keep having plenty of protein.
Avoid low fat products, which usually have stacks of sugar in them - as do pre-packaged cereals and fizzy drinks. Avoid honey - it's just as bad as sugar so far as diabetes is concerned. Avoid anything marketed as being for diabetics!
All carbs are a problem for diabetics, but fast-acting ones are worse than long-lasting ones, so if you currently eat things like white pasta/white rice/white bread, replace with smaller portions of brown pasta/brown rice/brown or granary bread.
