Type 1
Hi I was diagnosed on Friday, as yet I don't know if I am type 1 or 2, they say they are trying out metformin and now insulin to see what happens. On diagnosis my bg was 23 with ketones present. I am having major problems ATM balancing out the two, have got my bg down as far as 12.7 but my ketones were up to 2.4 and tonight my bg is 20 but ketones gone down. This is hellish confusing, and I don't even know what pushed my bg up so high in a 2 hr period. I had my first slow release insulin today too. Sorry for the long post just wanted a bit of a whinge

Welcome to the forums 🙂

Hopefully Northener will give your user name a shake because you don't really want it set to that!

Ketones, High BG's - that sounds more like Type 1 to me. They really ought to do a test for antibodes and c-peptide to confirm. Type 1 can be diagnosed at any age - so they can't be sure that you are a Type 2 just because you are out of childhood.

Welcome to the Forum - I'm sure there will be some type 1's along in a minute. Hope things begin to settle down for you soon. 🙂

Hiya! welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!

The short answer to your question is, I have no idea.

The longer answer goes like this; you haven't given enough info to make a guess. So instead of answering you I'm going to ask you some questions instead. deal?

You know when you were diagnosed and had ketones, how much had you eaten and what did you eat in the last day or couple of days prior to that? cos there are two types of ketone ..... both register the same as each other on the tests so in order to make an initial assessment of which type they might be, what you ate is central to that. However, the hospital should also be doingat least one if not a couple of quite in depth blood tests, which take a while to get the results, to establish which you are - T1 or T2, or possibly any other type.

Again the 20 today - tell us about your day please - from the minute you got up to when you had that result!

Can I say something - which isn't a criticism at all, so please don't think it is.

When you are pondering all this maze of new info, please try to give ALL info whether to us or your doctors.nurses. Let them assess what they need to know, and what to discard. It's often the daftest sounding bit of info that proves the most crucial to getting the correct advice - and saves everybody - especially you! - wasting time when you could be improving how you feel, barking up the wrong tree and making yourself feel worse.

They probably don't need to know the baby cut his first tooth, that's important right enough, but not to your diabetes. However if he's kept you awake cutting it for the last 7 night - that could be !

Hi and welcome to the forum. The guys here are wonderful and very knowledgeable, and always good for some support when you need a whinge!

Thanks everyone

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't been on for a couple of .days, and in the meantime I have had a couple of developments in as much as I have got my ketones down, and my bg is mainly down to an average of 12 not great but better than my 23! I have also been given a slow release insulin, at the moment they are treating me for type 1 and seeing how it goes.
I have been trying really hard with the diet part, although I think I may have had something I shouldn't have today as my last bg was 20, think I am going to have to be careful with hidden sugars, my food today has been weetabix breakfast, brown bread toast snack, lunch was rice cakes and snack a jacks (possible culprit), this was all before my pre meal test. I keep having major highs before bed, but I have been really careful with my dinners. My biggest problem is I have an issue with vegetables, they make me feel sick when I try them, so trying to cook healthy food is a bit challenging. However I have the proper clinic tomorrow with a dietician so hopefully that will help with ideas.
I am guessing with the ketones that it takes a while for the rubbish to leave the body and everything to balance out, I have gone from drinking nothing but coke, eating crisps and chocolate and processed food all day every day, and I haven't been diagnosed a week yet. I was just a bit frustrated the other day as I felt like I had given up everything I loved and still wasn't getting it right. I have out myself in a new mindset now, number one, I now know the insulin doesn't hurt (I'd rather have that than do the finger prick testing) so that's not such a scary prospect and I am looking forward t losing a few pounds, having more energy and going shopping for new clothes 🙂 I feel loads better already, not quite so foggy, I have been able to ditch my glasses and can sleep at night without waking up needing a drink and the loo.

Hi and welcome to the forum

I was diagnosed in January and they also did not know if I was type 1 or 2. The hospital sent my blood for a GAD antibody test to confirm one of the two. I too had ketone problems for the first couple of weeks, I was eventually confirmed as type 2. As I was very needle phobic ( still am!) they did not put me on insulin straight away and I am still on tablets.

You will settle down to a regime soon so don't panic. My bs still goes a little off some days, like today for example I've been bouncing between the 6's and 12's even though I'm sticking to the normal diet that keeps me stable! Annoying but it happens.

Good luck in the next few months. It's sucks but I've resigned myself to think along the lines that if I control this well it will ultimately make a lot of other aspects of my life a lot healthier too!

Welcome to the forum 🙂 x

Welome to the forum, you will find lots of good advice on here. Like you I am being treated for type 1, but I am still waiting to find out for sure which one I am, I was only diagnosed a couple of weeks ago so for now I am on insulin. I am not a fan of veg either but you will find some way of cooking/preparing them that you like, my new fave us chopped peppers, red onion and button mushrooms roasted with a sprinkling of chilli flakes, goes well with loads of things.

Hello Manicarrie. Welcome to the forum, sorry you have to be on here! I don't know whether you've been told that you need to watch out for carbohydrates, not just sugars ... all carbs eventually become glucose, they just do it more slowly (usually) than pure sugar. So if you're type 1, you'll need to use fast acting insulin for all the carbohydrates that you eat. How much you use depends on you - everyone's different. The long acting stuff is to provide a sort of cushion in the background. Watching the carbs is an important element of staying in control for all diabetics, especially type 2s not using insulin.
Hopefully your health care people will explain all this to you, and also hope you get a definitive diagnosis soon! There's a lot to take on board but you'll get your head round it soon.
Catherine

Hi willsmum, thanks. i have been uber confused over the carbs thing, especially as the booklet I was given by the dietician today says I have to have good carbs at every meal, I guess it is just finding the right balance. I am still high with 17s this morning and 21 before tea, I really don't know where from, yesterday I had weetabix, brown toast, snackajacks (not sweet lol) and omelette, with lovely tuc biscuits to take my metformin, I know it's heavy on carbs but the dietician said it was all fine. They have changed my meds to 2 x metformin am, 1 x metformin pm (it was 1 and 1). My 20 units of morning insulin are now 26 at night, hopefully I will see things balance out a bit. I could quite happily kill for a Snickers right now though!

Funnily enough, DUK no longer advise 'carbs with every meal' ......
