Hi my 25 yr daughter was rushed to hospital with KTA yesterday. She earts well and exercises daily. Confusing as she felt and still feels ok but keto and glucose levels were very high (7 and 27) . I’m presuming that once the drips take effect then things will settle down. It is still fluctuating after 24 hrs but she is not feeling any ‘bad’ effects. I’m guessing this is normal for a first time?

Hello @nikpt,

Welcome to our online community and I am so sorry to hear about your daughter being rushed to hospital. It must have been quite a shock for both of you and I can only imagine how stressful it must been for your family. However, I am glad she was able to go to the hospital to seek treatment. In terms of her health, things should settle down in time, but some people from the community will also share their thoughts regarding it. Was Your daughter experience symptoms of DKA before she went to the hospital?

Hi from me too - DKA only happens in response to a lack of insulin so the question is - did she even know she had diabetes prior to this?

Sorry to hear of your daughter’s diagnosis but good that her diabetes has been picked up, and that she is now getting the treatment she needs. It is a big change but a condition that is manageable, and it should not prevent her from doing all that she did before. Things just require a bit more planning.

Her team will work with her to find the appropriate doses of insulin but will want to bring her levels down slowly, in order to avoid damage to smaller blood vessels, so it is not unusual to find that there are fluctuations early on.

She, and you, will have loads of questions that arise, and there is a wealth of experience to tap into on here, from those of us living with diabetes. Nothing is considered silly on here, so feel free to ask, and perhaps encourage your daughter to join us too.
