Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All,
new here, but not new to diabetes am a type 2, have been for years and its been well controlled by metformin, and then the other day happened..!!
Been having problems with my vision for a couple of weeks long distance, i wear varifocals, (last eye check march 2012)
So being a bit worried i went to opticians, perscription had dropped by 1 , how shocked was me ..lol
Add that to the fact i had been rather mood swingy, was peeing a lot and thirsty, tired, you name it, cut a long story short i was starting my day at work, (in the NHS) i thought i would get one of my colleagues to check my Bm, but before i could ask i started to feel unwell, so they checked it anyhow ...shock of the week it was 25.4...!!! in 30 mins it went to 27....then within the hour 29.7.....they took me to my A + E bloods taken...Bm down to 27mmols...but still feeling unwell.
I was discharged, told to see my diabetic team in Gp practice so they could follow it up (3 hours later).😱
On seeing me at the GPs the Nurse called the doctor, BM 22.1, Hba1c check which was done at the hospital, had gone up from 43 to 83 in 3 months !!!
I was perscribed to increase my metformin double dose, and a new drug called linagliptin, after 2 days my Bm has now gone down to 20.5mmol, am feeling off colour at certain times of the day, should i be concerned its taking so long to go down ??? and why is it when i take my reading with the bm check machine it never gives the same result twice, within 2 minutes from the same place ?? (its an agamatrix Bm thing, tested and working ok) never had one before, but use similar at work.
Anyhow now i have written a war and peace episode i would be grateful for any advice you may have or experiences of similar, because at the moment im feeling confused.com ???
many thanks 😎

High Srh. Are you testing after a meal or after going for a decent walk ect. Is quite high. You should get some hint of work mates. Good luck 🙂

HI hobie,
Since i had this turn, i have been testing every 2 hours, i feel like a pin cushion, lol...😛
Im off work at the mo coz i feel so bad, but i guess i will have to see The Dn at the gps on monday again, sadly i dont work in a diabetic department, or it would be a breeze lol. 🙄

Hi SRH, welcome to the forum 🙂 Goodness, that's quite a rapid decline given you have been well-controlled for so long - was the doctor able to give you any possible explanation? It sounds as though your pancreas has suddenly decided it can't support you as it has been doing and you've suffered quite a fall in your ability to produce insulin. Have you been poorly at all lately?

Some medications take a couple of weeks before their action begins working fully, so this might be why your levels are only falling slowly. Alternatively, it may be that your pancreas is simply not able to produce enough insulin to cover the carbs in your diet. At what point are you taking your readings? On waking? Before or after meals?

Meters rarely give the same result twice - I can remember when I once pricked the same finger three times in quick succession, and got three different results. They were fairly close to each other, although the lowest and the highest were around 20% apart. Then I found out that they are only guaranteed an accuracy of plus or minus 10%, so the 20% difference was within the capabilities of the machine. I think you just have to pick one really, and act on that.

Hi Northener,
Thanks for the reply, at the Mo im taking them every 2 hours, so i guess, on waking, then a while after breakfast, etc etc post lunch pre lunch..lol

The docs have no clue why its suddenly done this, nor have i to be honest.

To my knowledge i havent been that ill recently, but then i work in the NHS so i could have picked up something without knowing ..lol

The Dn said then linagliptin should work pretty quickly and i was to be careful i didnt drop to low, how quickly is quickly ..??lol 🙄

Anyhow if it does not improve soon i guess it will be back to the GP on Monday...?

The pancreas thing is a bit worrying tho` but food for thought(with nil sugar lol)

Linagliptin works by stimulating your pancreas to produce more insulin, and also decreases glucagon which in turn lowers glucose output from your liver. However, if for some reason your pancreas is not capable of producing more insulin then it's not going to work very well. Certainly, if you were warned about dropping too low then it seems the DSN thought that it should work pretty quickly, so if things haven't improved soon then I would get back to the GP. There is a test called a C-peptide test that can show how much insulin you are producing, but I'm not sure if it would be used in a case like yours.

Hopefully things will improve and you will be sorted! 🙂

Thanks for the help Northener, will have to see what happens, will let you know, now weres my Bm jabber, off we go again lol 😛

At last after nearly 2 weeks, my readings have come down to low double figures, so the drugs are working, and my eyesight is returning, which means i can go back to work, with extra baggage (bm tester) lol

didnt realise how ill i felt until i got better, so strange how it crept up on me ??!! 😱

That's great news SRH. I'm glad you're feeling so much better. Long may it continue.

Pleased you are better. Being back at work should help (moving about etc). Dont work to hard 🙂
