Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January this year with a reading of 96 on my h1acb test and instantly started on Metformin 2 times a day one in the morning and one in the evening. I was also diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on ramipril once a day (a lot to take in for a 34yr old lad) yesterday (11.02.2021) at dinnertime I started to feel a bit shaky. I tested.my blood glucose level and was 3.6 so I entered panic mode and had a sugary drink and something to eat and it came back up to a normal reading. I have got a telephone consultation with my diabetes nurse on Wednesday and I don't know what to say

Hello @brydog I would just tell your diabetes nurse exactly what's been happening. 🙂

Hi @brydog and welcome to the forum.

Ditto is quite right, talk it through with your DN because something odd seems to be going on. I doubt if anybody would expect metformin alone to reduce blood glucose from the levels needed to give you a Hba1c of 96 down to under 4.

As a general principle, if you are testing and get an odd reading then it is best not to panic but to retest just to make sure that it is not some sort of testing error.

Let us know how you get on.

Welcome to the forum @brydog

As @Docb says, all meters say that if readings don’t match how you feel, you should recheck.

It’s quite unusual to experience low blood glucose on metformin alone, though it is possible for people without diabetes to get readings in the 3s. Additionally there are potential reasons for your 3.6 such as reactive hypoglycaemia.

But yes - worth asking your nurse for their ideas and guidance!

Hi all. I had a conversation with the nurse who also said it was unusual to have a reading of that. I have changed doctor's to one closer to home and a friend is also the diabetes nurse there so she is going to try and get me sorted out without medication. Said I've got 8 months to get my h1acb down to below pre diabetic level
