Hi I am new here and totally confused with the pre diabetes diagnoses, I was just told you have a 41 reading and you are prediabetes, like whats next, I have been feeling pretty tired blurred vision and yesterday was vomiting after eating, I dont know if this is prediabtes or just tummy flu...i feel awful im hungry all the time and scared to eat atm, fed up totally ...my gp is new and just doesnt seem to be listening ...anyway any info would be so helpful thank you

Hi @babyb1 and first off welcome to the forum.

Your 41 reading - I am assuming that is your HbA1c - is at the top end of being normal so there is nothing to panic about at all. Officially it needs to be 42 for a "pre-diabetes" label and 48 or over to get a diabetes diagnosis.

Where does that put you? To my mind it is saying that maybe it's a good time to start learning about diabetes and think about some lifestyle changes just to stop it going any higher. As I say, no need to rush and no need to panic. Read around the forum, look at some of the sticky posts at the top of the Newbies section and check out the learning zone. Ask questions of the members. We have all been there and mostly come out the other side healthier and wiser and more than happy to share how we did it.

PS. Doubt if your tummy upset has anything to do with your HbA1c reading. Blurred vision can be associated with diabetes but that normally happens, if it happens at all, when you have very high levels and you are working hard to get them down. You are a very, very long way from that.

Hi and welcome from me too.

As mentioned above, your HbA1c result of 41 is actually just within the normal range. Anything below 42 is normal, 42-47 is considered at risk of diabetes and 48+ is diabetic but many people don't experience symptoms unless their levels are very high. To give you some perspective, my own HbA1c was 112 at diagnosis and I was thirsty and weeing all the time (5 or 6 pit stops every night) as well as through the day and feeling pretty washed out but still able to feed and much out 4 horses every day, so not incapacitated by it or anything.
I think it is likely that your nausea is unrelated. Blurred vision and fatigue can be symptoms but again unlikely to be caused by diabetes with that reading of 41.
Cutting back a bit on your carb intake will help to lower your reading but probably just avoiding cakes and biscuits and sweets on a regular basis and added sugar of course may well be enough to do the trick rather than needing to take more significant dietary action. Incorporating a brisk walk or cycle ride into your daily routine will be beneficial in lots of respects too.

I was sooo hungry when first diagnosed, but things settled down when I started on tablets - metformin initially.

There is always something you can eat when doing low carb - but I find it very satisfying and really can't recall being hungry even on two meals a day.

Welcome to the forum @babyb1

Interestingly ‘prediabetes’ is just shorthand - it isn’t an officially diagnosable condition as I understand it. It just means that you are at increased risk of developing diabetes, and that your metabolism has begun to struggle to properly digest the amount of carbohydrate and sugars in your diet, so some glucose is staying in your bloodstream.

As others have said, your result appears to put you at the lower end of this, so depending on how your body and metabolism reacts to any adjustments you make, you may be able to avoid a diagnosis of diabetes entirely.

One of the biggest questions when told you are in the prediabetes range is usually ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will be wanting to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, bread, pastry, potatoes grains, cereals and many fruits.

Reducing your portion sizes of these foods and switching to seedier and slower-release versions would be a great step.

It can also really help to keep a food diary for a few weeks (be brutally honest!). Noting down everythingnyou eat or drink, including snacks and nibbles, and calculating or estimating how much carbohydrate is in each. That will quickly show you which meals and snacks are likely to be causing the biggest challenges for your metabolism.

Good luck, and let us know how things go 🙂
