Hi all

As a recently diagnosed Type 2 and having previously had a sweet tooth, I wondered if anybody had any recommendations for sugar-free sweets that reasonably convince as the real thing? eg pick and mix style. I've seen a few companies supposedly offering them online.

Bought some own-brand sugar free "gummy bears" from Lidl which taste quite nice. Apparently Haribo used to do sugar free but they were causing people to have problems "down below" so they don't do them any more :D

It's conventional confectionery I'm going to miss the most 😳
 
Unfortunately all artificial sweeteners have a laxative effect if consumed in more than just very small quantities, so whatever you find you will have to be careful!
 
You also need to do a bit of research about artificial sweeteners in general, not just the laxative effect. Some widely used sweeteners have a higher GI index that sugar itself - maltodextrin in particular. If you see that hideous additive in the list of ingredients, avoid like the plague.

I have a sweet tooth, in fact I have a tooth for any food, sweet or savoury but I have coped with cutting out a lot of naughty foods by allowing myself 'treats' now and again rather than every day.
 
Sugar free doesn't mean carb free, though. I used to buy those matchbox size packs of sugar free sweets in various flavours but after realising that half a dozen sweets worked out at around 20g carb, which is a big chunk out of my 130g per day low carb diet, and for zero nutritional value, I ditched them and now stick with nuts (sometimes in the form of a KIND or Nature Valley bar) and 85% dark chocolate.

Yes my other half pointed out some 'skinny' bars in Aldi today and they were 56g carbs per 100g.
 
Oh my - the write ups on the Haribo gummy bears were absolutely hysterical if your sense of humour is easily tempted into those areas...
For sweet things these days I make a jelly and add frozen berries.
As I don't want things sweet these days I have bought some powdered gelatine, make a strong jelly and add sugar free squash, squash the fruit a bit to release some juice. If I have extra yoghurt and or cream I add those too, when the jelly has cooled down a bit. When the frozen berries are add it sets almost instantly.
