Relationship to Diabetes

Hi, I am probs posting in the wrong area/thread etc but I have not been on a forum before so please forgive me if I popping-up where I shouldn't! Wonder if in spite of this if someone can give advice? Have 20 year old daughter, currently just finishing 2nd year of uni. She is very sporty, generally healthy but in the last 6 months has lost/is losing so much weight - currently 7stone 3lbs, is so tired all the time ie gets up, has breakfast but is then too tired to do anything else and has to go back to sleep, is white as a sheet, eating less and less, is having tingling/numbness in arms and has recently started getting up in night to go to wee, high ly unusual. We have diabetes in family, maternal great grandfather and grandmother. To cut to the chase, she had a lactase intolerance test a few days ago - I have banged on about diabetes to the GP - apparently she does not show the symptoms - anyway the results were as follows - fasting 5.1, then at every half hour for two hours were: 5.2, 5.4, 4.2 and 3.6. I understand that a larger than increase of 30mg/dl between fasting sample and any other subsequent sample is normal; less than a 20mg/dl is lactase deficient and 20-30 mg/dl is indeterminate. Can anyone help me regarding my daughter's results? Not being an expert, I cannot understand if the jump from the fasting to the third result may be an increase of 30mg/dl or not but the test I believe, could be 'abnormal' indicating a glucose tolerance test so I have learned? Help please anyone?

Hi Pannini, welcome to the forum 🙂 I would say that, from a diabetes point of view, your daughter's readings are those of a non-diabetic, which can vary between 3.5 and 7 normally. You would need to be above 7 mmol/l fasting or above 11 mmol/l on a glucose tolerance test. Some of the symptoms certainly do seem to match diabetes though, especially the weight loss. A blood glucose meter might be useful if you can take readings an hour after eating, as this will indicate whether her insulin response is sluggish.

Hope it isn't diabetes, and that you can discover the cause.

Thank you for your reply - I will try and get hold of one - perhaps should have mentioned that she has had a colonoscopy because of having some tummy probs and has been diagnosed with celiac's. She has been on a gluten/wheat free diet for months now, with no difference ie no increase in energy levels etc. She had a lactase intolerance test to see if this was the cause of ongoing probs. Have read that sometimes Celiac's can lead to diabetes or perhaps other way, I am unsure. But thanks for information regarding her tests - I suppose I am trying to look around for possible causes of probs (especially tiredness) at moment. Thanks again.

I think that Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease, as is Type 1 diabetes, so the two often crop up together - if you are prone to one then the other may also appear. What about thyroid checks?

No, she has not had tests for her thyroid - hard to get doctor to do much really - he is even querying Celiac's disease even after a colonoscopy that is apparently the 'gold standard' of diagnosis. The only other thing a recent blood test did report was a 49 ALT score out of an upper level of 50 and a similar score for bilirubin - so one of my thoughts was perhaps liver wasn't working brilliantly perhaps - hence with my thoughts re; diabetes and liver not converting that well into glucose etc - layperson's conjectures I suppose. But yes, could be overactive thyroid - might explain fatigue especially - will add to my list - thank you.

I have abnormal bilirubin levels - my GP thinks it may be Gilbert's Syndrome, which she assures me is not a problem. We are complex beings! Whatever the cause, she shouldn't be feeling like this at her age, so keep strong and keep pushing for an answer.

Thank you for support - very much appreciated.

Dear Pannini A big hello to you, my daughter was about 7 when she kept saying she was tired and was sleeping more, she had a blood test and found out her Thyroid result was low. She didn't have any medication and last year her thyroid count was back to normal. Hope everything goes well with your daughter. Sheena
