Hi Everyone,

Has anyone been on 1000mg of Metformin and have been taken off it completely. I feel as if I'm completely mad, as since I came off the remaining 500mg of Metformin I felt well and was in good control.

However, since the last week, my readings have been so erratic, I thought it was my machine (Contour) and got a new one. I can take readings minutes apart and they range a couple of points even up to 5.

Does anyone know if there are side effects coming off Metformin? I have been sweating profusely this last week and am beginning to wonder if I have an underlying infection which is causing the numbers to be so erratic? I am currently suffering from sinus congestion and muffly earache/dizziness.

It's really alarming me to see such high figures 14.6 the last couple of mornings but the numbers come down to near normal in the early evening? I have been taking paracetamol which might have have some relation to this?

It's really hard to try and describe how I am feeling. I feel as if my safety net has been removed. Maybe I need to go back on the Metformin?

I also have not had a p for four months and wonder if there is any correlation to Metformin controlling my hormones which are going ga ga at the moment.

Donna 🙂

Hi Donna

It must be do frustrating that you can't make yourself undstood to your Dr.

You posted elsewhere that prior to the metformin you were having menopause symptoms and they stopped when you were taking the metformin. It sounds like that may be what you have reverted to. Metformin is given to people with PCOS so it can certainly impact on female type things.

Do you know any female Norwegians who have excellent English who you could get to go to the Dr with you - so that you can try and talk everything through.

Thanks for getting back to me Margie.

I am going to write a letter to the doctor and hand it in tomorrow. I will translate it into Norwegian.

My husband and I had a long chat about this last night and his theory is that when I was diagnosed, I had been without a p for 4 months and was enduring nightly sweats and symptoms of menopause. When I queried this with the doctor, she told me the night sweats could be because of the diabetes and she put me on Metformin there and then. I now find that nearly one month of coming off the Metformin, (I had a UTI and was put on Trimethroprim), my hormones seem to be dictating the way my blood sugars read. Maybe, just maybe, the low dosage of Metformin was enough to keep my hormones balanced and doing so, kept my blood sugar steady?

I don't know if it's psychosomatic, but I dread taking my readings now for fear of what they will be. As we speak, I am having a rush of heat over my forehead and drip sweat. For the record, they have gone from 18 down to 10 in a 2 hour period this afternoon.

What do you think? You can imagine my conundrum trying to relay this to a male Norwegian doctor who's English isn't that good! I have a stash of Metformin in the medicine cabinet and am seriously thinking of taking one tonight.

I would appreciate any other thoughts as I feel as if I am going mad.

Donna

Sorry, can't offer any advice but just wanted to say I hope you get it sorted soon.

Trouble with me and hot flushes was, I have a hot flush when my BG spikes up high too, so I'd always have to test my blood before knowing if it was menopausal and going and standing outside in my underwear .....

And of course the influx of female hormones also sent my BG up too .... so it's hard.

Thing is though I presume if you aren't diabetic and are menopausal, your BG doesn't spike? - or does it, sort of the same as gestational D? - menopausal D?
