Have a nasty cough keeping me up at night. I have been trying to avoid my usual honey and lemon go to but admit to succumbing on a couple of occasions as it helps stop the tickle and allows me to sleep for a while. Nothing else I've tied hits the spot in the same way.

Obvs this is bad for the spot glucose test and I woke up to a 9 8 this morning. What would you recommend instead?

You can get diabetic cough mixture from a pharmacy. Be aware that it tastes like tarmac with a hint of Fisherman’s Friends - ie foul! I usually stick to normal cough mixture but only use it when I really need it.

I don't get coughs usually but TBH if it guarantees sleep, then carry on. How can you possibly define how much the rise was down to the honey and how much to the infection that's causing the cough? Cos that WILL increase your BG anyway.

Diabetic Strepsils from Boots. 🙂

Are these the sugarfree ones, @Ditto? I've bought them from Boots and they are pretty good.

I don't but have no point of comparison as the sore throat started the day I got the glucose spot tester. Argh. My usual morning reading thus far have been under 9 though,

Hi Inka

I have got a sugar free cough mixture - Robitssin Mucus cough from the pharmacist but it's a drink I think I need to help relax the bronchii. Worryingly, I quite like the taste and I detest cough mixture.

Yes. I ended up asking the pharmacist because everything has sugar in it but knew there had to be something for us when we're poorly. 🙂

Best cough suppressant by a street is heroin, but codeine, another opiate, helps. Co-codamol should help alongside warm honey and lemon. And a Covid test, I suppose.

Covid negative. Will consider the options!

I have found bog-standard paracetamol pretty effective in calming a cough myself.

That and a hot toddy, of course. Juice of 2citrus fruits (whatever we have in), teaspoonful of honey, top up with water, good glug of scotch. Bliss!

And as TW says any BG rise that doesn’t get squashed by insulin I can put down to the infection 🙂

Night Nurse for me, it knocks you out so you forget about the cough 😉 thats my goto med if I get a bad cold but not needed it for a couple of years now.

I once watched my partner having a coughing fit while unconscious on that stuff. Scariest thing I've ever seen - he couldn't move.

Phew! Never thought to try paracetamol. Not a big tablet taker in general.
