COFFEE appears to be growing in popularity across Scotland – which is positive as research points to the various health benefits of the humble cuppa.

Artisan coffee shops that roast their own beans are on the increase, making the drink even more popular – with Glasgow becoming the country’s new coffee capital.

Scotland now boasts 26 small batch roasters, with seven in Glasgow and four in Edinburgh.

And research by Glasgow University has discovered that the city likes its coffee stronger than Italy and Spain.

John Gartly, master roaster at Gordon Street Coffee, at Glasgow’s Central Station, said: “It’s no surprise that so much research says coffee is good for you. Coffee beans are a complex foodstuff. It’s good to know coffee not only tastes great but there are hidden health benefits there too.”

We take a look at the health benefits of the drink.
