Manchester is Britain's "most toxic city" in the battle against obesity with the highest number of fast-food outlets per population, according to a survey.
A study by Weight Watchers found the city has a takeaway, cafe or coffee shop for every 492 people - 25% more than Bristol (623), the second highest conurbation for high street eateries.

probably an absurd statistic based on a misunderstanding of Manchester City Centre's unique position. The City of Manchester itself is only a slim wedge in the whole Manchester conurbation so that Manchester City Centre serves a much wider population than the just the City of Manchester ( Salford, Bury, Trafford etc). And the city centre is a major entertainment hub drawing in people every night from upto 100 miles away or more.
On top of that it has the largest population of students in Europe, getting on for 90,000 students which might help to explain some of the takeaways.
It actually prides itself on the "Curry Mile" in Rusholme which is a major tourist attraction.
If they did a calculation on the whole of greater Manchester they would probably find the figures not too far away from the national average.
You suspect the prominence of Edinburgh in the same survey is also false in the same way since Edinburgh is a major international tourist location needing hundreds of eateries for far more than its own population.
Anyway perhaps they could use this false statistic to withdraw benefits from any Manchester Councillors that might be on them 😉
