Cinnamon appears to have a short-term benefit for diabetics, but its long-term value is unclear, an updated review of the literature suggested.

In a meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials, cinnamon reduced levels of fasting plasma glucose by a mean of 24.59 mg/dL (95% CI -29.76 to -1.44 mg/dL), according to Olivia J. Phung, PharmD, of the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., and colleagues.

However, cinnamon had no significant effect on decreasing hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels (mean decrease of 0.16%, 95% CI minus 0.39%-0.02%), they wrote in the study published in the latest issue of the Annals of Family Medicine.
