The Institute Of Medicine, and independent organisation, has coined a new name for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome- Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease, or SEID. It reflects the core symptom of the disease- exertion. And exertion can actually wipe patients out.

The report presented by IOM on Tuesday estimated that between 836,000 and 2.5 million Americans suffer from the disorder, and most have no formal diagnosis. The IOM urged doctors diagnose the illness faster and better, and it set five main symptoms as the criteria.

The most pronounced symptom is persistent and profound fatigue, often accompanied by memory problems or other symptoms.

There is no specific medical test for the disorder, and doctors are left with no other choice but to rule out other possible causes for the exhaustion. It is not known what causes it. Also, there is no specific treatment, and according to the IOM, less than a third of medical schools teach about the disease.
