Today at work we have decided where we’re are going for our Christmas party. I’m looking at the menu and have no idea what to choose for the best, I know what I’d like but am worried about carbs and sugars. It’s quite a posh pub so I can’t imagine the portions are going to be huge but after a couple of glasses of wine I’m worried I won’t keep my sensible head on. If I post the menu could I have some help with what others would choose?
as much as I love dessert I might just go for starters and mains to be good

STARTERS
CHRISTMAS MENU 2019
spiced carrot & orange soup with warm ciabatta bread (v/ve/df)
grilled pear, roast walnut, halloumi & gorgonzola balsamic glazed warm salad (v/gf)
creamy maple smoked bacon & wild mushroom fricassee on toasted ciabatta bread
traditional scottish smoked salmon & prawn cocktail with marie rose sauce (gf)
MAIN COURSES
roast free range norfolk bronze turkey – rosemary gravy, duck fat roasted potatoes, pigs in blankets, roast chestnut & apricot stuffing, root vegetables & roast brussel sprouts (df/gf option)
slow cooked rich beef & ruby port stew, buttery mash potatoes, root vegetables & roast brussel sprouts (gf) pan roasted salmon fillet, creamy orange & saffron sauce, roast new potatoes & roast broccoli (gf)
grilled suffolk pork loin, rosemary gravy, buttery mash potatoes & braised red cabbage (gf)
creamy mushroom & fire roast pepper stroganoff with steamed basmati rice & baby leaf spinach (v/gf)
DESSERTS
chocolate brownie & winter berry sundae - vanilla ice cream, warm brownie pieces, winter mixed berry compote, fresh whipped cream & wafers
banana, toffee & roast pecan sponge with hot custard
caramelised apple snow mousse with a buttery cinnamon & cranberry short bread biscuit trio of ice cream – raspberry ripple meringue, white chocolate & strawberry (gf) selection of cheese & crackers with caramelised ale onions

All looks very nice 🙂.

I would say salmon & prawn starter and the turkey as the roast pots and stuffing are easier to avoid than mash or rice - Not always easy on a group booking but I would tell the pub your requirements - most places are normally happy to help.

Enjoy:D

I would do, salmon, roast turkey and have what I wanted on dessert but if you wanted to deprive yourself of a christmas treat, go for the cheese and biscuits, one would't hurt.

Definitely the salmon & prawn cocktail for starter

Main I'd personally go the grilled pork loin as I think the turkey would be a waste as the root vegetables may be high carb as well so that'd be a lot to miss out on, I'd then ask them if they could sub the mash for some lower carb vegetables (if they are that good of a place they wouldn't mind doing that) but also you could try asking them if they provide nutrition information in the first place

Dessert I'd actually head straight to the cheese & crackers and eat cheese lol

BUT it's Christmas, 1 little treat wont do any harm, you don't have dosing of insulin to contend with so I'd say relax a little and just enjoy it
xx

Have what you want, it's Christmas, or at least, it will be.

Thanks for the advice everyone I’ve picked turkey for my mains and have decided to have either a starter of prawn cocktail or dessert of cheese and crackers.

old me would have had the mushroom fricassee, turkey and banana, toffee & roast pecan sponge with hot custard. I’ve not had custard in 5 months ☹️

Hope you enjoy your meal, whatever you choose @bakebeans 🙂

Thank you I’ve gone for turkey for mains and the cheese for afters. I’m not a big fan of a cheese board so figured it will be easier for me to only eat a little, any of the others I know I’d want to eat the whole lot

You can have proper custard - eggs and cream, thin it with hot water for pouring - you can add sweetener if you need it.

I still do have custard, ( Vegan, ) very occasionally and find it does not spike me too badly, certainly better than anything with pastry in. Why not experiment ahead of time and see how these things affect you, as we are all different. 🙂
