Hospitals in England will be treating more coronavirus patients on Christmas Day than at any point in the pandemic, official data suggests, leading to fresh concern about the ability of the NHS to cope with the surge in cases over winter.

At the height of the first wave in mid-April, Covid patient numbers in England’s hospitals peaked at 18,974 but this is expected to be surpassed within days. The number increased by more than 1,000 in a day on Monday for the first time since the height of the pandemic, Guardian analysis shows, to a total of 17,709.

The same trajectory would take patient numbers past the all-time high of 18,974 by Christmas Day. Figures for Tuesday and Wednesday have not yet been released.

If it's a new strain will the vaccine still work? :(

I'm having a relaxed Christmas and then I'm going back to full lock-down, not even going into our shopping centre, will pop across the road at 7 when still dark and hardly anybody about plus lock up the bungalow, nobody in nobody out! Gonna tell son to do the same.

think it was prime minister Whitty who said 'should work' didn't sound holy confident. seems a strange article as most will be at home any way apart from the poor drivers stuck south

Everyone so far seems to think it will. The vaccines (at least so far) all target the spike protein, and while that's changed a bit it's similar enough that they expect the vaccine-induced antibodies (and other bits of the immune system) to work.
