Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I was wondering if anyone knows if Cholesterol levels can be good despite overall blood sugar control not being good ?

They are really independent parameters so not necessarily related. However, they are both used to indicate your health status and risk factors to certain conditions.

The two numbers aren’t completely interlinked, though I think sometimes underlying issues can affect both (eg the metabolic syndrome in T2).

When was the last time you had a diabetes review? You should be getting your cholesterol and an indication of average glucose levels (your HbA1c) checked every year.

Can you remember your last results?

There’s a definite link with high cholesterol and high blood sugar, plus ‘bad’ LDL that can’t be processed properly (Due to glucose damaged receptors), low HDL and raised triglycerides. Even people with well controlled T2 can have high cholesterol.

This paper shoes how insulin, cholesterol and blood sugar are all linked:

In type 2 diabetes (T2D), cholesterol metabolism is disturbed so that cholesterol absorption efficiency is low (24), and cholesterol synthesis is elevated (26).
