Last night we had Chinese for tea - the first time I've had it since carb counting. I used the Carbs and Cals book and basically had what they have in the book apart from having chicken instead of beef so they said it would be 80g carbs and I went with that - 2 units per 10 grams - 16 units. Less than 2 hrs later I felt hypo while putting youngest to bed so DH took over while I went to test my blood - 1.6 😱. I told DH and grabbed the lucozade and drank that then basically passed out on the sofa for a little while. DH was obviously worried but knew BG would rise and I was ok within half hour except my head felt bad so had to go to bed early. What would you inject for chicken chow mein? Not sure where I went wrong? Obviously too much NR but why? :confused:
 
Does the carbs and cals book give a portion size ?

Or - maybe its the noodles, does the book give a dry or wet weight ?

I think the problem was the fact you injected too much insulin up front. A lot of people (including me) when eating a large helping of noodles or pasta choose to split the amount of insulin and give half befor eating and the other half an hour or so later. This is because noodles/pasta release there carbs very slowly and if you give yourself all the insulin up front, chances are the food you have eaten hasnt released all of its carbs yet and so your sugar levels plummet! You may also find you have a higher reading up to 6 hours or so after eating, Happened to me a few times and then i started splitting my injections and was fine

Maybe next time you can try this?

With me, pasta + fat (ie shedloads of cheese, normally) = spike after I've already gone to bed - so you definitely do need to split it, but it may take some fiddling with actual split and actual timing - but persevere if you like eating it !

FWIW I have 40% upfront and of course now spread the rest of it out over several hours on the pump, but prior to that I'd have half the balance after 2 hours and the rest after another 2 .....

Woah, 2 units per 10g, wow, I've only ever been told to do 1 unit per 10g. I've been tought that 1 unit of insulin (Novorapid) will bring your BG down approx 2-3 levels, and that 10g of carbs increases your BG approx 2-3 levels.

Also, did you check your BG before the meal?

These things can be very different for different people though, so what you have been taught can only be a guideline or a starting value. 🙂

Also, did you check your BG before the meal?

Everyone is different Clarkey, I take 2.7 units per 10g carb at Breakfast, 2 units per 10g at Lunch and 2.5 units per 10g at Dinnertime.

The book does give a portion size, can't remember what it said but it did say full tray although I realise they do vary a bit.

Ok, this is definitely worth me trying! I have never split the dose before but have noticed I go high a lot later when eating pasta etc so will give it a go. Don't want to give up on Chinese :D.
