Chinese takeaway

After having an Indian and swapping out so much of what I normally eat but still spiked loads! I’ve decided I’m not going to eat Indian food. It was never my favourite anyway.

Chinese on the other hand I love. Is there anything that’s even remotely ok?

I usually have.

Chicken balls.
Chips
Chicken chow mein
Crispy chilli chicken
Prawn crackers
Chicken satay skewers
Singapore rice.

So I wouldn’t have chips and the rice I think would have to be a tiny portion.

What about the rest? I’m under no illusion that it’s a takeaway so if it all got to go, then so be it. Thanks.

My go-to Chinese meals are stir fry vegetables with cashew nuts, chicken in black bean sauce, beansprouts instead of rice or noodles.

I avoid anything with noodles, rice and crispy coatings.
Meat and veg (Plus nuts)
Tofu
Egg Fu Yung

My partner and I share a Chicken or duck with ginger and spring onion and a portion of stir fried veg for me. No rice or noodles. Will have a few of my partners prawn crackers too.

I have had Chinese once since diagnosis. I love pad Thai and had tofu pad Thai. It is reasonably healthy except for the noodles. I decided I wanted some. Similarly I have had fish and chips twice. I didn't eat all the chips. I have been though my local Indians menu and will have some soon.
You are new to your journey and perhaps know now how you are reacting. I still have a greedy gene. If I were to say I will eat half and freeze half I probably wouldn't. I have bought some edamame noodles from H and B and have thought of getting stir fry chicken and veg or similar and adding to my own noodles. I have also bought some broccoli rice. I love rice but haven't eaten it since diagnosis.

Could you have a chat with your local takeaway about possible alternatives?

Don't forget portion control!

I am very partial to chicken satay skewers. At the moment I would avoid all your other choices as they are all high carb. Stir fry with beansprouts instead of noodles is good. I also like bok choi with mushrooms and water chestnuts. Any meat or fish not battered is good but go steady on the sauces as they often contain a lot of salt and sugar and thickened with cornflour.
We usually make our own versions at home now as too many of my old takeaway favourites are off the menu for me now.
Same with Indian takeaway. I really love a good biryani but it's too high in carbs for me just now.

Hope you are able to find some options that help you feed your Chinese itch @Damien - it’s good to have a treat every now and then, but even better when you can enjoy that treat and know your BGs are going to more or less behave and you aren’t going to feel grim with sky high BGs afterwards.

Hopefully you’ll find some options that you enjoy just as much as your previous choices. It might take a bit of experimentation, and choosing some new things, but maybe there are some hidden gems in there waiting to be discovered 🙂

I make a satay stir fry with whatever meat and veg and then add peanut butter, soy sauce and a bit of chilli depending on how spicy you like it.
