Care for children who suffer from diabetes is lagging behind the standard of treatment offered to adults, a report has suggested.
Just 6% of children receive the eight key care processes which test their eyes and measure their cholesterol levels and blood pressure, according to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
But half of adults receive all of the care processes, it said.
The National Paediatric Diabetes Audit, which examined more than 23,000 young people and children with diabetes, found that the quality of care across England and Wales is at an eight-year high but many children face a postcode lottery for treatment.
The report also revealed that the number of children admitted to hospital with potentially fatal diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has almost doubled in the last seven years.
