Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
My 8 year old son in the last two hours coming out in red spots -chickenpox. Was just reading about chickenpox and was a bit suprised that 90% of children will get it. i was surprised at this because i have read or seen that 10% of diabetics are type 1. Can u guess what i never had has a child. I did get chickenpox when i was 23 years old and extremely bad. I know this was 10 years ago but i have had diabetic symptoms for 2 years before being finally diagnosed last year. May be unrelated but food for thought.

There is (or at least was) a theory that some T1s are 'triggered' by a virus. I had chickenpox about a year before being diagnosed, so I've always thought it may have started the autoimmune response that knocked out my beta cells.

I would imagine you'd need to have the virus within a year or two of diagnosis to find any link.

There seems to be a new theory every year as to what actually triggers it mind you.🙄

I'm sure they'll pin it down one day.🙂

I had just a cold flu like virus which was why i went to see my gp and why it was spotted straight away he was a great gp had him since birth
Back onto chicken pox they have gone round nursery twice and relative we seen a few days before both boys got it but jemima has been fine My worry is hubby has never had them and his ammune system is pants so he will get them too x

I had chickenpox in my teens and was in my late 40's before being diagnsed with diabetes. My big boy was about 4 or 5 when he had chicken pox and is nearly 26 and hasn't been diagnosed with diabetes, although there is a predisposition for type 2 in the family.
