Dear all,

Project Title: Explore the experience of patients on Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and the perception of patients and pharmacists on reporting of ADRs with a focus on diabetic medication.

I am a final year pharmacy student at Kingston University, I am currently completing my project on the side effects of diabetic medication. I am doing this study to explore how you may deal with side effects in your diabetic medication and how frequently you may experience them. I would like to ask if you would help me by participating in a short survey on your experience.

Please read the participant information sheet provided (attached). If you agree to participate in the survey after reading the participant information sheet, then click on the google form link provided on the forum post. This will lead you to a series of questions on the topic. The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.

If you want to withdraw do not submit an answer and exit out the survey form. By completing the survey and submitting an answer, this will be considered implied consent. There are no risks associated with participating in the study. If at any point you feel uncomfortable you do not need to continue taking part in the survey and you can exit at any time without it affecting your education/relationship with the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing at Kingston University in any way.

No personal information will be asked in the survey. Nothing will enable to the reader to identify who the respondent was. All information we gain from you will be maintained in a strictly confidential manner. The results will be used as part of my dissertation. It will be made available to my supervisor, the teaching team and students within the Department of Pharmacy at Kingston University as deemed necessary. If you have any questions or problems or you wish to find out the outcomes of the project please feel free to contact me or my supervisor. Would greatly appreciate your help by doing the survey.

Yours faithfully,

Project Student: Sarah Hassanain – k1710810@kingston.ac.uk

Hope your research goes well Sarah

We have a few members who have had a difficult time with Metformin, Statins and Ozempic amongst other common meds, so hopefully some will feel able to take part

This is only for Type 2 Diabetics, was going to complete but the title is Side effects of Type 2 Diabetes Medication Survey

Thank you for your response, I've included Metformin, because my study is on diabetic meds I didn't include statins, there is a section on how patients respond to side effects in general, please feel free to skip section A and go on to section B on how you deal with side effects in general. Many thanks appreciate the engagement ! Sarah

I wish you lot doing this research would say up front it's for Type 2s - and someone else at Kingston has posted the same thing already.

I’ve merged the duplicate threads to keep responses and conversation in one place 🙂

It does mention above its for type 2 but there is a section that can be completed by all, if you're interested in taking part, you can skip section A which is on type 2 and go to section B onwards which is inclusive to everyone. Thank you

Thank you 🙂 ! I'm not sure where my post will get the most exposure so i thought i'd put it here thanks

‘General’ is a pretty safe bet as that gets the most traffic.

And thanks for confirming that people with all types of diabetes can take part, by skipping to section B 🙂

I started but didn’t finish as I got confused. I have taken all these medications with side effects, but I stopped taking them because of the side effects. For example I took empagloflozin a few years ago which caused DKA within one week. So I didn’t know what to select for how long have I been taking it, as of course I stopped taking it after the dka. Same for a couple of the others but with different side effects eg 13 years ago I started metformin, had stomach upset and so was changed to slow release version.

I really appreciate that you tried it and thanks for the feedback, i will include your response that you've typed up in the results. Thanks 🙂 !

Im happy to complete the survey if you could clarify what to tick for the first question about how long I have been on the medications. If I’ve tried them in the past but stopped due to side effects then do I just answer that I’m not taking them?

You can include all of the different medications you were on even if they were stopped and for the length of time you were on each one for no problem
