With the number of people suffering from Type 2 diabetes on the rise, a leading charity has launched a campaign to encourage people to take early action to tackle the disease.

According to figures from Diabetes UK, 61,522 people in Surrey are now thought to have the disease - up from 60,304 in 2012.

And it is expected that seven per cent of the population of the county will have diabetes by 2020 - a rise mainly expected due to new cases of Type 2 diabetes, which already accounts for 90 per cent of cases nationally.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high. It can often be treated through changes in diet, weight control and physical activity.
