Freemasons in Gloucestershire have given £170,000 to charitable causes this year and they are keen for everyone to know about it.

Some people regard the organisation as a secretive one that exists purely for the benefit of its members.

But the freemasons say this is simply not true and their payments to various organisations in the county proves it.

In a letter to the brethren of the Province of Gloucestershire, Provincial Grand Master for Gloucestershire Tim Henderson-Ross said: "This demonstrates that our ideals are not just abstract ideas but are the drivers for taking action to help people who are not as fortunate as ourselves."

I've known for a very long time (one of my school friends Daddy was a Mason) that they do one heck of a lot for all sorts of charities. And without being funny the types of men that were in the Lodge had more than a couple of bob to spare to fund it - as well as the Des Res and the cars!

I recall her meeting a mutual friend and saying (jokingly) that she wasn't sure she should be friends with him, as his bisiess was in competition with her Dad's. 'Oh hardly that much comparison surely?' he replied. 'Why?' 'Well - I don't have a Roly Poly for starters!' 'Neither does Daddy' she retorted indignantly ' - cos his is a Bentley Wentley!'
