At risk of diabetes
Hi. I have been having problems with my right foot since 24th April 2022. I had surgery to clear “pools” of infection 11th May. I still have a tiny hole in my ankle which is being dressed twice a week. I am still waiting for results of MRI I had in October. I was on Iv and oral antibiotics for 6.5 months.
One consultant said he thought I might have Charcot foot, the other said cellulitis & osteomyelitis. I gradually stopped wearing my rocker boot at home because it was throwing out my back and hips. Now I feel as if I am walking on a solid egg under the outer edge of my foot, slightly forward from my ankle.
My chiropractor had a good look at it on Thursday and called me yesterday to say she thinks it it Charcot foot and told me to see GP for referral ASAP.
I was under an orthopaedic consultant but I am wondering if I should see the podiatry specialist?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

Welcome to the forum, I am racking my brains to remember who it is who has Charcot foot as they may be able to give you some words of wisdom about the best route for you to seek treatment. It is @Flower who has this condition, just remembered.
I would have thought that you would need Xrays or scans to evaluate your foot so the sooner you can get a referral the better. If you are already in the system then you may not have to wait too long.

Hi @Great Owl and welcome

Sorry to hear you’re having problems with your foot. Have you been given a diabetes diagnosis ? Charcot is usually a complication of diabetes where peripheral nerve damage can cause bone and joint collapse & lead to fractures and changes in foot shape.

For fast help I would get an appointment with your GP who can refer you to the correct clinic to diagnose & protect your foot from further changes. Charcot is quite a rare complication and can present as a sprain, it isn’t seen very often so stress that you’ve been told it is potentially Charcot foot and needs to be seen urgently. I would also get in contact with the clinic that gave you the rocker boot & know your history, do you have any follow up with them?

Are you seen at a podiatry clinic at all? If not you will need to be referred to one, there is self referral in some areas but that is usually a slow process . For suspected Charcot foot you need to be seen as soon as possible.

If you have noticeable changes to the structure of your foot & Charcot has been mentioned a few times don’t wait to see how things go, do all you can to get help quickly.

Wishing you well.

Hi.
Thanks for your reply and the link. It’s actually the link which brought me to this site.
I don’t have diabetes- I have been tested several times over the years, including last year, because the doctors have no actual reason for my neuropathy.
I’m going to call the gp tomorrow.

Best wishes

Hi flower,
Thanks for your reply.
I don’t have diabetes. I do have neuropathy in Lower legs and feet in the same way people with diabetes do. The Drs have tested me several times because they want a reason for the neuropathy.
I go to podiatrist to help prevent ulcers on my toes.
I will call the gp in the morning and ask her to refer me to the podiatry team as I seem to have ended up in no man’s land.

Best wishes
