WHILE it is one of the oldest known diseases with references to it as far back as the second millenium BC, diabetes has never proliferated as much as in modern times.
Our sedentary lifestyles and the consequent problems with obesity are leading to what has been described as a 'national crisis' in the condition by one eminent expert. One in three Irish people has a family member with diabetes and, in Kerry alone, there are at least 7,000 now living with the disease.
