change prescription?

My husband has just had a letter from the doctors saying that they have reviewed his notes.

They have ordered a new meter for him, he just needs to arrange for it to be delivered.
The letter also says that they will no longer prescribe and lancets or test strips for his current meter. all new prescriptions will be for the new meter stuff.

Can the doctors do that without seeing or being in contact with him? His diabetes is under the care of the local hospital

If so, what is the 'GlucoMen LX' meter like in comparison to the 'Accu check combo' (I think. Its the one that has similar carb counting feature to pump meters)

Not sure if they are allowed to or not as care seems to var from place to place. Contactthe hospital team and the doctor to find out why the meter is being changed. It could just be this old one is considered out of date. I was advised by a nurse some time ago that meters need changing every few years any way, but she had just been given a lot by a rep she wanted to pass on to patients.

This does seem to be happening more and more, unfortunately, as they try to cut costs by making deals with a single supplier. I would say though, that in this case your husband hasn't got too bad a deal as the Glucomen Lx is a well-regarded meter, rather than some of the unknown Korean brands that appear to be popping up. Hopefully, it will provide good, UK based support and software. Alternatively, your husband may be able to argue for the retention of his current meter if there are particular features or software that are important to his day-to-day diabetes management. I think the Glucomen also has carb counting capability, but could be wrong.
 
Unfortunately, the Glucomen has no carb to insulin calculation facility!

The only other meter I know that does do this is the Insulinx.

If your hospital specifically wants him to have a meter with a carb counting/insulin calculation facility then they may have to make a case for it - assuming it's the CCG who have said this.

But if it's just the doctors surgery, then he needs to see the doc and explain how the Accu-Chek Expert differs from an ordinary meter.
