Hi, I am currently using Dexcom G5 and am considering buying a smart watch. My phone is an iPhone 6 but I would consider getting a different phone if it would allow me to use a smart watch with better CGM and Mapping functionality.
Do any walkers/mountaineers have experience of a smart watch that can show CGM + Ordnance survey map + Grid reference? I am particularly interested in the Garmin smart watches (e.g Garmin Fenix 5Plus) but would like to know of any cheaper alternatives!!.
thanks for any advice

Hi jlury, welcome to the forum.

I suspect you are wishing for the moon. You have an iPhone 6. I have an iPhone XR and and an Apple Watch 4. Both know where I am at any given time, but don’t show the grid references. To get full OS and grid reference you could get that on your phone, if it has enough storage, and you may be able to get that App on your phone. Because of different operating systems, other watches wouldn’t fully “pair” with the iPhone. That’s the Apple hegemony.

So what you would have to find is watch that has the capacity to have stand alone functionality, and they don’t come cheap, even if they exist. I can take phone calls on my watch, but only if the phone is within range. That’s the problem with all watches - they would need to piggy back on the much more powerful phone to get full functionality.

I suspect you may have to change your phone to the Android system, which is far less secure. Or don’t bother getting a watch at all - just use your phone.
