Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi - with regards to the book I read on diabetes (Please see my last post in the book section), What was interesting is that the author (a Dr) cited that studies done in the US showed that is was possible that TYPE 1 developed early as the body's reaction to cow's milk especially in children. It was quite interesting to read.....

Yes, I've heard that old chestnut before too. The truth is, they don't know what causes it. How about this one? One particularly strange study I read about recently concerned the high proportion of Type 1 diabetic children in Iceland. The development of the disease often seemed to occur among children conceived during the late autumn and early winter months, and further investigation revealed that, at this time of year a popular traditional dish of smoked mutton was consumed by both men and women. Smoked mutton contains something called nitrose-amines, and it is thought that these may have an adverse effect on the beta-cells of a child ? the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. Studies among populations of mice revealed that up to 16% of the progeny of mice fed foods containing the nitrose-amines developed diabetes. The proportion was higher among male progeny.
So, the study concluded, don?t eat smoked mutton before having sex if you are hoping to conceive a child!

In the far off land of fire and ice
Where warrior tales are told,
They love to eat the slow-cooked meat
Of a lamb that?s grown too old...

The sagas tell of valiant men
Who came across the seas,
They?d plunder and they?d pillage, then
Their womenfolk they?d please!

But legend brings a warning dire ?
?Tis dangerous to eat
A sheep cooked on a smoking fire
Before a carnal treat!

For should a child be then conceived
Especially if it?s male
For one in six, it is believed
Its pancreas might fail...

So let this be among your checks
If you are feeling amorous ?
Don?t smoke sheep before having sex
Even if you find them glamorous!

OK, with regards to finding a cure, I wonder if they are working on a slow release longer lasting insulin? I mean one where rather than injecting yourself daily, you could inject just once a week........just thinking off the top of my head

It's one of the common 'guilt trips' us parents of T1's have to cope with Rustee:(

It doesn't explain everything I'm afraid do I'm inclined to take it as speculation. My own experience is that my daughter had nothing but breast mik til she was 4 months old, never had formula but gradually started eating cheese and drinking cows milk (in addition to breast milk) and continued to be partly Bf til a year old.

I have also been accused of giving it to my daughter whilst she was in the womb because I drank quite a lot of milk whilst preg. Doesn't matter that I gave up caffine wine anything unpasturised - I drank milk as it was healthy and helped my morning sickness, but I still harmed my child?

(and just to add - I was not b/f at all - I refused to be and it wasn't very fashionable so my Mum didn't bother - I don't have T1 - though I suppose there's time yet🙄)

I don't buy it, there is much more too it IMO

OK, I understand, it's still fairly new to me. I thought it was a new concept. I suspect it's a challenge. The last thing a parent needs is to feel guilty. No wonder it wasn't on the news then...it's a fairly old concept

They are - there's something called 'smart insulin' that will respond to your blood sugar levels, releasing just what is needed, when it is needed:
