I know I was mega upset in 1972 or 1973 when a T1 chap my first husband worked with who very kindly used to pass on his already pored over copies of broadsheet 'Balance' s to me - when I first realised that 50 years previously - I'd have been dead. I gave up reading it for some years after that, and didn't renew my membership when it was due as it had upset me that much.

I did think about that when asked if there was any T1 diabetes ‘in my family’ 30 years ago... that basically it would be hard to know, because people would simply not have lasted long if any older than my grandparents

Without insulin my mum would not have lasted long enough to have children, so neither my brother nor I, nor any of our children would ever have existed...
I don’t know the family history before that unfortunately, mum says she had an aunt who had it but I don’t know if there was anyone else in the direct lineage. Would be interesting!

When I was diagnosed, I knew about my great grandmother because my cousin had been researching the family history and had come up with the death certificate. But when the hopsital asked if any other members of my family had it, they weren’t interested in someone so far back.

That's why I've always been very curious about my paternal Grandma (Lavinia) who started getting unwell after she had her third child my erstwhile Auntie Gwenda who herself was 'sickly' for a while and died when dad was a child, later while he was still young by his mother. Dad always said he thought his mom had heart trouble but clueless about his sister.
