Almost 1000 new nurses have begun working in Scotland's hospitals since September 2012, figures have revealed.
According to the statistics from NHS Scotland's Information Services Division, there are 66,367 people working in nursing and midwifery across the nation's 14 health boards, an increase of 987 over the past 12 months.
The figures have been cautiously welcomed by health professionals amid continued warnings over staffing shortages.
Medics say that unless more staff are recruited Scottish Government proposals for a fully resourced seven-day health service could be under threat.
