my before dinner reading tonight was 4.7.

dinner was

4 (big) tempura prawns with sweet chilli sauce
followed by
chilli con carne with long grain rice

my bg is now 10.3 (approx 3 hours after)

so - do you reckon it was the tempura prawns, or the long grain rice, or the fact that I forgot my evening dose of metformin?

Id go with the sweet chilli sauce was it homemade ?

Most likely culprit I'd have thought was the long grain rice. Did you measure the serving? You might find a smaller portion easier to deal with. And I think brown basmati is thought to have a gentler absorption curve.

Forgetting meds won't have helped either 🙂

Hi Caffeine_demon,

I would say its all of it.🙂The batter on the prawns causes a spike - sweet chilli sauce causes a spike - white rice causes a spike - not taking your metformin will cause a spike.🙂Bev

Hi Caffeine_demon.

I would say it's a mixture of the prawns (batter) and the sweet chilli sauce. The name even suggests problems. Try the chilli without the rice. I sometimes have courgettes cut into ribbons, if you must have a base.

Hopefully, it will only be a one-off and we all learn from our mistakes. That's the beauty of testing after each meal.

Donna 🙂

Id of said the rice its a bugger for causing high bg thats why we use brown basmati these days..... its all trial and error with the big D,like someone said maybe try it next time without

Rice does it to me every time, but I'd say you heaped trouble on trouble with that tea. Lovely though it sounds, you had the sweetness in the sauce, the batter and the rice as well. Naughty!

It occurs to me that I have a potato ricer in the drawer at home, I'm just wondering if there's another vegetable a gadget like that could be used on to replace actual rice. Also, perhaps you could use chilli oil rather than chilli sauce?

if you grate cauliflower and cook it gently it is a good rice substitute 🙂

Hi there,

I was at aloss as to what to have for a quick lunch time snack.

Whizzed a packet of chickpeas complete with juice in a processor. Add 2 tablespoons of tahini paste, one garlic clove, squeeze of lemon and pinch of cumin. You can add more beans if you like and I added left over kidney, butter and chick peas. The result is lovely and it goes well with mixed crudities.

I haven't tested yet, but will wait for a couple of hours in case I spike!

Donna x🙂

Will give you results later on!

Pulses seem very BG friendly when I have them. Hope you find the same 🙂

Hi Gang,

The hummus was a great success. I'm going to make some oatcakes tomorrow and try them with the hummus. I can take oatmeal as porridge is okay too....yay!

Before hummus bg levels were 5.4
one hour after 7.0
two hours after 5.4

Reckon that's okay. Low fat, high fibre and good for you.

Donna🙂

tried brown basmati tonight (with prawns in passata with a dash of chilli powder) went from 7.4 (i'd just had a bag of sunbites) to 8.4 (1 hr after)..
