At my 'ordinary' eyestest in early 2010, optician said I had the start of cataracts in one eye. Roll forwards 12 months, now in both eyes. No need to do anything or tell anyone.

Last week my licence renewal forms dropped through the letterbox. so I had to tick the box that says I have cataracts in both eyes. If my last eye test had been within the previous 6 months, I would have had to have asked my optician to answer some questions from his records. You are told not to have another eye test on your bit, and it tell the optician the same thing. (unless of course you were having one 'now' anyway) The questions on 'his' bit ask about your normal sight test results (the info on your prescription) and your peripheral field test.

So far so good. So I am assuming they will want me to visit an optician and have either or both tested.

Am I correct in my assumption, and is it both or only one or the other?

Anyone know?

I've avoided looking for this on t'internet because I imagine if you didn't have a medical restricted licence, then you would do absolutely nowt until Dr/Optician says 'you need to tell the DVLA' and I'm assuming mine haven't got to that stage yet. So perhaps the info wouldn't apply to my scenario .....

Although I do often have blurry eyes, it's worse after long times spent reading etc - so I try to avoid close work/computer beforehand at the times I know I need to drive - I'd usually be quite happy to drive in any case were there an emergency because it really isn't that bad, from where I'm sitting - but am just trying to be a bit sensible where I can. I'm also not too worried about whatever the test says because if it's got to the stage where I can't drive then IMHO it's got to the stage where they need to refer me to the hosp and get em sorted.

I don't know but what I have done in the past is to put an asterix or write note 1 on the form and then attach a note.

You could attach a note to say that you asked the optician if you needed to do something and they said no.

I could have Margie - if I hadn't already sent it back! LOL

Please let us know what happens, as others may face similar issues in the future. Hope it all works out OK for you.

Cheers, of course I will - whatever happens it will be OK (I mean as I said if it needs sorting then let's sort it, if it can't be sorted then there's an end to it which wouldn't be nice for me, but would be for everyone else on the roads!) - but I find it interesting to find out what the actual procedure is going to be .....

I could be wrong but my guess is that they will ask for on opticians report from your normal optician plus get you to have a visual field check at an opticians decided by the DVLA. If the cataracts are not affecting your vision I would guess that you will be ok to continue to drive

Nah - they wrote to me on 22 November and said that someone from the DSA would be in touch 'shortly' as I have to attend a Driving Test centre, so an Examiner can testify to them that I can read a car number plate at 20 yards .....

I rang DVLA for a definition of 'shortly' which they can't give me, but she did offer to send me a letter to say I can still drive while I'm waiting, and that arrived the end of the week.

Incidentally, she said they'd faxed DSA on 22 Nov, but I spoke to our local test centre and they swear they haven't heard from anyone. So I've given up now until after Xmas.

Will try again after 8th-ish January if nowt heard by then.
