Cases of TB are surging

Tuberculosis (TB) cases are surging, fuelling fears England may see a resurgence of the Victorian-era illness.

The latest UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) figures show 5,480 people were struck by the bacterial infection in 2024 — a rise of 13 per cent on the previous year.

Kansas is facing one of the largest recorded tuberculosis outbreaks in U.S. history, according to local health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I remember having my jab at secondary school in the 1960s. They used one of the classrooms and we lined up in the corridor. Some of the boys (it was a boys' school) were noticeably nervous and weren't helped by the boy at the front, looking into the classroom, saying that they threw the needle into your arm like a dart.

Proper click bait headline that. 'Cases are surging...'.

I wouldn't say a 13% increase on a low starting figure in an increasing population is surging.

It's also naff all to do with diabetes...

I thought cases in UK, which are modest, tend to be among people who arrive/return with infection and importantly they are treated.
I've taken an interest because like @MartinA our school did jabs for TB. However, I was very nervous of dentists and of jabs. As a preliminary for the BCG, we had a skin test and I remember rubbing mine, in the hope I didn't need the jab. Much to my brother and sisters disgust I didn't need the jab, but they from same household, indeed my sister and I shared a bedroom had the jab. I often wonder if I had had a reaction or whether I should have had the jab. I later became a blood donor and have always had jabs when offered.

It's not click bait (the tide was going out now it's coming in), the UKHSA have just published a new update yesterday. The trend has been downwards for a long time and from 2021 the trend has gone into reverse (springing point), which means in reality the case numbers are trending above the expected dropping base line.

TB is the world’s leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, having surpassed coronavirus (COVID-19). It is a bacterial infection that most frequently affects the lungs, which is when it is infectious. 81.5% of all TB notifications in 2024 were in people born outside the UK but there was an increase in both UK-born and non UK-born populations.

TB can spread through close contact with people who have the infection and have symptoms.

I am not saying cases are not increasing but they are not 'surging'.

A word of warning though to anyone considering becoming a moderator: I'm still awaiting confirmation that Diabetes UK are okay with funding my preferred lease car should I agree to volunteer as a moderator.
