Hi all,

Alex has a question for you :

I just wanted to know, how many carbs can i have in 1 meal ? (age 10)🙂

alex.

Thanks. Bev

Ooh! That's tricky! I eat fairly large portions, and probably have between 120-150 gm of carbs in a meal in total - that's for a main meal, plus pudding.🙂

Alex, if you are a basal/bolus regime then it is up to you how many carbs you have. My son is 13, he has anything from between 2 and 10 units of Novorapid to match the carbs he eats. He is allowed to eat whatever he wants, including chocolate or sweets with his meal, as long as it can be covered by insulin there is no problem.

hi alex

It is something that is different for everyone but I usually have between 100 and 150 grams for an evening meal. But so long as you're eating healthily and you have enough insulin for it you should be able to have any amount, sometimes I might have a meal with no carbs and then other times for a special occasion I might have 200!

Amy

Hi Alex

You can eat whatever your friends of same age / size / appetite are eating. You don't have to eat the same amount of total food or carbohydrates within the meal each time. The only part that is different is that you and your Mum need to work out how much insulin to have with each meal, depending on carbohydrate content, blood glucose reading before meal, exercise you have done, exercise you plan to do after meal - which is what most people's pancreases do automatically.

Don't worry if sometimes you have blood glucose levels a bit higher or a bit lower than your targets occasionally - I still do after 12 years of needing insulin, and I didn't have the challenge of going through teenage growth aand hormone spurts, as I was 30 when I got Type 1 diabetes. But you'll cope, especially if you keep getting your Mum to type your questions here.

Hi Alex, when I was your age I used to have 60 or 65 carbs each meal. I could choose the sort of carbs I had and then fill up on none carb foods.

If you set yourself a limit for each meal you can get better control.
The more carb you eat in one go the more insulin you will need and it is so much harder to have any control doing this.
Did you enjoy your chocolate bar the other day? :D

I can eat however many carbs I want, I sometimes eat only 20g, I sometimes eat as many as probably 300g. I enjoy a varied carb diet.

start practicing with your mum adding up the carbs so you can get an idea of how mnay carbs are in different foods.

i would say that you can have as many as you like in a meal (i do), but i would also check with your dn to see if they recommend a set amount as a limit per meal due to your age. if not great and just remember to work out the insulin needed to cover them 🙂

I eat as many as I want. Im currently trying to increase my weight as lost 2 and half stone prior to diagnosis and none of my clothes fit me or my wedding dress! Need to have it sorted by May 23rd!!!! I look like a skeleton and like to have a few curves!

I have found bread and pastry affect my levels more than pasta. If i just have a salad for dinner i feel light headed hour or so later but i was always like that even before diabetes. If i put a bit of pasta with it it keeps me going til tea. But im still learning as are you.

Take care Alex and Bev.

Hi Alex, i think you are beinge very grown up. It is not easy being diabetic, lots of adults struggle with it too. I'm on tablets at the moment so don't have to work too hard to work out carbs.

You are asking all the right questions. Perhaps if your mum can get a GI diet book, it will help you and your mum work out how many carbs you are eating, and it will also help you have treats sometimes too.
