TOTAL CARBS - SUGAR ITSELF IS ONLY ANOTHER CARBOHYDRATE!

Ooops I'm so sorry - accidentally left the caps lock on, I'm not shouting!

Please can u tell me when checking carbs should I be looking at total carbs or sugar ty
The sugars are also included in the total carbohydrate figure. I've never really understood why they are also shown as a separate figure too as all carbs end up being converted to glucose, .maybe its because sugars are converted a bit faster.

Oh ty yes that is confusing I'm glad I asked thank you so much.

Yes - on the Mars Bar I used to correct a hypo today (I know, I’d forgotten to take Dextro tabs) it listed carbohydrates as 31g, below that was “of which, 18g sugar”. As Dave says, useless and confusing information. Still worked, though, as I had time to sit around to wait for it to hit.

Interestingly enough, that's not quite the case - as the various studies on Glycemic Index show.

Sugar is generally a combination of glucose and fructose - so it's not as fast acting as a pure glucose, such as white bread. But even different forms of pure glucose act at different speeds.

I might be wrong but I always thought that the total sugar as a ratio of the total carbs tells you how quick the food is absorbed. So Coca-Cola would have pretty much the same carbs as sugars but porrage would have a lower rate.

It’s not an exact science but gives me an idea.
