Hello everyone,

I hope that you are all well.

This is probably the thickest question which has ever been posted on here but Im sat at work just trying to get my head round it!

Basically for the last few months I have really been hammering the gym and have lost just over 3 stone which I am really happy with. Im tending to go 5/6 times a week which is alot but Im really enjoying it so it doesn?t seem a strain. Anyways, after finishing the gym I tend to have something to eat and more often than not it will be something high in carbs ? for example a jacket potato, bowl of pasta or something like this. Now I have been thinking that this is good, not only for weight loss but also for diabetes ? now im thinking its not as good for diabetes as first thought.

I know that carbs are broken down in to sugars but surely having a bowl of pasta isn?t that bad for you ? is it?

Thank you

Bob

Hi Bob, it's not a thick question at all, but a very complex one! 🙂 As you are very active and have had a terrific weight loss, the extra carbs will probably be a very good post-exercise option. When you exercise you use up your muscle stores of glycogen (a form of glucose used to power your muscles), and you will also deplete some of your liver's stores. In the hours after exercise your body will attempt to replenish these stores, so eating something carby is one of the best ways to achieve this quickly. For example, this morning I have been for a run - after the run I ate some toast which is normally sufficient for me, but this morning I have had to go for another slice as my levels dropped low. All this is without needing extra insulin - my body is recovering the energy stores by taking the glucose from my blood.

The only thing to watch out for is if whatever you choose to eat 'spikes' your blood sugar levels too quickly, so you may need to test your levels periodically after eating to see what works best for you. 🙂

I believe that only your meter will really tell you the answer!

Just what I was thinking.

It would be very interesting to know what the results are. It would also inform you as to whether your weight loss is improving your insulin sensitivity.

Andy 🙂

Yes - totally agree wth the meter - it has all the answers!:D

Yep , totally agree with everyone else , carbs affect our sugars all differently and only your bs results will tell you how its affecting you , congratulations on weight loss 😉
