I find the CARB & CALORIE COUNTER book is really helpful. It contains over 1,000 photos of a wide range of popular food & drink items.
The carb, cals, protein, fat, saturated fat & fibre values are displayed in colour- coded circles below each photo - so it's makes it quick & easy to see the nutrient content of the food & drink consumed.

The book isn't primarily designed for people creating meals from scratch - more for eating boring foods and prepackaged stuff. I mean I object to going anywhere 'out' and eating stuff they serve anywhere - I want imaginative 'home made' food if I'm paying more for it - not 'glamorous' burgers and chips.

That's why I adore eating out in France - you get 'different' stuff - and the menus - except if you stick to chain restaurants which we don't unless there is nowhere else - are all different wherever you go as they do still specialise in local specialities.

You always talk about going to France, it sounds amazing and I'm well jealous haha, I have a fear of flying though and have only made it to Benidorm once when I was a kid :( x
 
Don't need to fly! Without a car, get to Dover by train or bus, and jump on a ferry as a foot passenger and jump on another train or coach in Calais to go wherever. Takes 90 mins Dover - Calais or 35 mins on the train via Eurotunnel. Or take the Eurostar train to Lille - or look for a coach/camping holiday - Eurocamp maybe - or other companies - that delivers you to a campsite somewhere foreign where they have ready pitched tents which they have hired for their customers.

We have a motorhome so we get around Kaylz in whichever direction we happen to fancy once we set tyres in France - we rarely preplan our routes or where we're actually going to stop - and because of this if we either don't like it or we've had enough of a place or it rains and the forecast isn't brilliant - we point South usually!
 
I have the book and I bought the app which I put on my i phone and tablets too. It takes the guessing out of what food is put in front of you.

As a child we used to go off to Europe in an old van with the four of us sat on bench seats in the back. We had a petrol sock, which I thought was perfectly normal. As we travelled, when we bought petrol, we put the same amount of money spent on fuel into the petrol sock. When petrol money was all spent we knew that we had enough in the sock to get back to Dover. We did on a couple of occasions have to push the van onto the ferry at the end of five weeks, but that was not lack of petrol, just that we had broken down!!!
 
Ah touring in the old days .... friends of ours had driven to one of the costas in Spain - where they stayed - get this for rich! - in an hotel - in their car (round the time when we went to Playa de Aro camping in a Mini van before there were any motorways over the channel and we just had the one!) and coming back via the Santander ferry (still think it's too expensive even now LOL) met another Brit who they discovered when they stopped to see if they could be of help had had two punctures whilst on holiday - they too were trying to make the same ferry. Gary's spare fitted their car so he lent it them as they could afford a new one and it would be easier in Portsmouth getting one in English.

They were still in touch after 30 years!

It was hard going anywhere foreign in those days because of the 'V' form even if you had a lot more than us cos our Government in their wisdom placed a stingy limit on how many £ worth of currency one could take abroad with one. 1969 - £64 each for a fortnight's self catering in Majorca before we were married ...... Neither of us spent all of our holiday money - and we only ate in about 3 times - and NEVER stayed in all evening, plus we went on a few coach trips! Courtesy of good old Doug Ellis - Midland Air Tour Operators ! Only later after he sold it to Horizon (which is now Thomson) did he re-invest some of it at Villa Park.
 
Thank goodness things are better for travel these days, Saying that I'm off first thing in the morning driving down to Southern Germany and Austria, Long drive but worth it and certainly need the break 🙂
 
Speaking of travel... if you look waaaaay over there on the horizon, you can just about make out the original topic of this thread :D:D:D

Anyway, back to the important matter of reminiscing about old holidays in France - we spent many years as a family driving down towards Bordeaux... 😛
 
I am very lucky in as much as my wife shares the meal prep for me. I love to cook and being home based I am about most days and prepare our evening meal and she has been a diamond in adapting her diet to accommodate. I have been diagnosed for about seven weeks. We bought a diabetics cook book from a Frosts Garden Centre. The first recipe we tried sent my BG into the stratosphere. I tend to prepare simple foods, I love curries and home made seem fine with yoghurt. However I can see that with some more severe diabetes its a big issue. So I am wary of BOOKS and Online recipes. Try it and see approach?
 
France: last summer I've travelled in France by long distance buses. I've gone to Paris both on airplane and by train.
I find using train and buses in France much better than fly, because the time one saves with the actual flight is destroyed by the airport check in and luggage. The dinstce are short.

Of course if you're not alone and have a friend to switch the driving, driving by car could be very interesting and funny. You could find very interesting places.

Back in topic

Unfortunately there's not an Italian translation of the Carbs an cals book. My dad and my mum don't read English, but I think they will find useful for them, because they are getting older and older and they need to eat healthy, and control the calorie intake.
