Hi all. Loving the info you all give. Just found this site last week and is becoming
a must read. Am T2 diagnosed about 18mths. On 1 x 500mg Metformin daily. BG levels from 5 to 7 usually. Know that too many carbs not good but given no clue as to how much is too much and how to measure. Your help would be appreciated

Hi weecee, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sounds like you are doing pretty well - well done! 🙂 How did your diagnosis come about? The recommended daily amount for carbs is something like 250-300g per day, but I think most of us would find this way too high, even on insulin 😱 Personally, I have about 100-150g per day which I find gives me lots of flexibility over what I can eat but keeps my blood glucose under good control and insulin doses quite low (higher insulin doses can be less predictable, so for me, lower doses work better). Really, much will depend on what you can tolerate, both the amount and type of carbs - some will hit your blood sugar levels faster than others. You will need to weigh non-packaged food, or read the information panels on packaged foods to work out the amounts of carbs - writing a food diary for a week or two will really help with understanding what you are consuming - remember the carbs in drinks as well as food! You can use something like the Collins Gem Calorie Counter to look up the carbs in most items.

As it appears you have a meter I'd suggest having a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S - this will help you to monitor the effects of different meals on your levels and tailor your consumption to what you can tolerate well 🙂 I'd also suggest having a look at the 'Glycaemic Load' approach to selecting and combining foods so that they have a slow, steady impact on blood glucose levels, The GL Diet for Dummies is a very good introduction 🙂

According to the text books a 'normal' diet is around 250g carbs per day, low carb is 120-150g, ultra low carb is up to 50g.
If you check labels it's easy to count, you can make yourself a little database of all the things you eat regularly, and in time you won't even need to refer to your notes.

Thanks for the help folks. To answer you Northener, was diagnosed after I had a turn at work one day. Had lots of tests etc and fasting glucose was 13. Not bad compared to some on this forum. Started on 2 X 500mg Metformin at first and had rough tummy so asked GP if I could try just one. She was happy to give it a go. Much better and glucose levels quite good. Regarding the carb counting, with the labels do I take the carbs per 100g and weigh food to get count? That is what I had thought. Thanks for the referencesame too. Will check them out. Am learning lots here

Thanks Jude. A database and diary are good ideas. Did a diary in beginning for couple of weeks for Nurse Specialist but not since so might do another. Try anything if I can get off Metformin.

Yes 🙂 It depends what you are eating - some things will show the amount of carbs per portion (and tell you what a 'portion' consists of) in which case you don't need to weigh the portion, but all products have to show carbs per 100g 🙂

Hi Weecee...... One of the best sources of information is Google, particularly for veg..... just google "carbs in 4oz potato" or some such thing

May I add to Martin's post above. If you google an item to find out carbs, it may be a US site, therefore you need to minus the fibre to get the net carb value. For example, 100g of carrot is 10g, fibre is 2.8g, so net carbs are 7.2g. UK food labels already have the fibre taken off.
