Can anyone suggest a good carb app to help me lower my BP as I think that’s part of my problems.
Thank you. I realise after reading a number of different comments on this forum and I’m beginning to get a reality check for how I am coping and dealing with being a diabetic. The past nine years my diabetes was kept in check with my medication as I just got basic advice in that just keep a balanced diet and the odd treat which I did and didn’t really think about low carb food etc. The past couple of years I admit I became lax and had more sugar treats particularly during start of lockdown 14 months ago when I started to bake and obviously ate more than I should and then eating more suagr treats with being anxious as lost a few people during pandemic and feeling generally ina low mood. I spoke to my DN in January as my Hbc1 went up to 61 and we chatted about my diet, exercise etc. I was doing well until I had health issues which appeared to be my body becoming intolerant with metformin which when I stopped my health issue went away. Starting on gliclazide twice a day 80gr my BG is average 12.9 and my DN along with GP want me to hang in there until July when after 3 months I’ll get my bloods taken to see if my body is settled with new meds. I am anxious that my BP is still so high which I rarely have experienced in past 9 years on metformin and gliclazide. Joining the forum I have saw so many comments about low carb diet and I know I need to continue watching what I eat but didn’t take into consideration what carbs I was putting in my body. Since yesterday I have been looking into low carb food for diabetics and I am definitely taking too many per day. So I have started an ‘honest’ daily chart in what I eat to hopefully reduce my BG. i Need to become more aware and accept that my diabetes which I havent appreciated really that I need now to take much more care. Thank you for all your support. What are you hoping the app will do @Scottie Lottie?
And is it blood glucose (BG) or blood pressure (BP) that you want to reduce?
If it’s carb content (plus calories etc), then Carbs and Cals is very well regarded.
Just downloaded the Carb and Cals app and what an eye opener. I’m taking way too many carbs each day. . Started my daily food chart today and I’m sure I’ll be shocked at the amount of carbs I consume. What are you hoping the app will do @Scottie Lottie?

As a matter of interest, how many carbs was it telling you that you were eating each day?Just downloaded the Carb and Cals app and what an eye opener. I’m taking way too many carbs each day. . Started my daily food chart today and I’m sure I’ll be shocked at the amount of carbs I consume.
I find nutracheck best for carb counting as it is UK based with pictures of packaging and can scan barcodes, create meals etc which makes it quick to use. I use carbs and cals when eating out (in the distant past!) to help guess carbs though as the pictures help identify portions.
I’ll Keep that in mind if I find this app not working well enough. I’ve only started it today monitoring my food. I’ll let you know how I get on. To be honest I can only find on the internet for a type 2 diabetic that I should be taking 200gms a day and on NHS website a balanced diet basically. As a matter of interest, how many carbs was it telling you that you were eating each day?
If people are going down the low carb route with higher fat (though this really is just not low fat) then less than 130g per day is what is regarded as low carb but many people find that they need to go much lower than that so you will see mention of as low as 40g per day. This is usually because they have tested the effect of foods and find that is the amount their body can tolerate. If your diet has been very high in carbs it is better to cut down gradually as a sudden reduction in blood glucose can cause vision problems.I’ve only started it today monitoring my food. Thank you so much for that information. I will certainly take things slowly as the new meds I am on my DN says to let my body get used to it. My first day on my food chart I was 174g carbs And 1300 Cals.If people are going down the low carb route with higher fat (though this really is just not low fat) then less than 130g per day is what is regarded as low carb but many people find that they need to go much lower than that so you will see mention of as low as 40g per day. I went down to 60g per day last June and suffered problems with my near vision which is only now getting back to something like normal.
The amount which is right for you will depend on any meds and how much exercise you get amongst other things, everybody is different and will have different tolerance to carbohydrates, It really is a minefield you have to negotiate but it can be done.
