Hi everyone I’m newly diagnosed type 2 and wanted to ask about smoothies. The smoothie I normally have has plain natural yoghurt, half banana, frozen summer berries and about 100mls of cranberry juice. I know the cranberry and banana are high sugar but I do love this and wondered whether the yoghurt and blending make a difference?
 
The blending means it will hit your blood sugar quicker than if it wasn’t blended. It would be a good idea to test your blood sugar before and after eating it to see how it affects you.
 
I know some people do find smoothies do raise their blood glucose but it will depend on the carb value of the individual ingredients which you could work out. You could be at 25-30g carb for your smoothie. but as Lucyr says you will only know by testing.
 
I bought a Nutribullet a couple of weeks before diagnosis.
A couple of trials showed just how high I spiked, even without any fruit or fruit juice, so it has been in the cupboard ever since.
 
You are better eating the fruit with the yoghurt in their more natural state than blended as a smoothie because they will hit the blood stream quicker as a smoothie. If the yoghurt is a full fat natural yoghurt it may slow the release of the natural sugars from the fruit a bit but I would imagine they use a cheap low fat yoghurt for such things, partly to "appear" more healthy and partly to increase profits. By all means test it, but I wouldn't make a banana based smoothie a regular on my menu if I was Type 2 and trying to control through diet. I think it is likely that the cranberry juice has added sugar as cranberries are quite sour and bitter without sweetener. Like @Drummer my NutriBullet is now redundant. You burn more calories chewing food, it slows the release of glucose from them and it means you are less likely to over eat/drink because the action of chewing is satisfying.
 
If it is a bought smoothie then you should find the total carb value of the bottle, if you are making yourself then you can control the ingredients so maybe use full fat yoghurt, the berries, avocado, and a low sugar cranberry juice. you might need to experiment a bit with ingredients to get the texture and flavour to your liking. Have a look for Keto smoothies for low carb recipes. (beware of the annoying adverts)

Maybe try some experiments if you get a biggish rise with your classic recipe? Perhaps drop the banana? Or try adding chia seeds? Go for full fat yoghurt? Less cranberry juice and a squeeze of lemon to keep the sharpness/acidity?

Thanks I have tried reducing the cranberry and banana. I got my glucometer today so will try testing.
