It's not drink driving, not even remotely like it (in a legal sense)as with drink driving you can be guilty of being in control of the vehicle even if you are not in it (keys in hand e.t.c.)
You should remove the keys and ideally keep them our of immediate reach just in case you try to start the car while in a confused state. But as long as you are not in the driving seat while hypo your licence should be safe.
Only going by what my senior D nurse told me about the drink driving its all new to me
thanks for info ypauly 🙂
I think D nurse maybe a little confused or maybe over cautious. As long as you meet the conditions of your licence you will be fine. With drink driving there are NO conditions that make that legal and indeed just being in charge of the car is as bad as driving it. With diabetes it is perfectly acceptable to sit in the passenger seat while recovering from a hypo which would be at leats 45 minutes after a normal BG reading. Of course in the ideal world you would be no where near a car if hypo or even likely to be hypo as to be driving you really should have a good level of control.
As a new to insulin diabetic it may be wise to do what I did and stay out of the car for a few weeks to make sure your levels are under good control.
Yeah indeed - but chance losing your licence and you ain't got a car ANY day, have you?
Fraid I agree with Paul. If necessary take time off sick !
I know you should remove keys from ignition and sit in passengers seat if you are having a hypo but where should you put the keys as the police treat it same a drink driving 😱 ?
Thanks

You are assuming that you are capable of thinking of moving to the passenger seat!
Some are also assuming that the keys need to be in the ignition, with my car they only need to be in the car.
I would suggest that whenever you drive, you make sure you are well above 5 before you start the engine. If you feel you are getting low (you should try to explore how quickly you drop in level and measure that against your journey), stop the car safely and turn the engine off and THEN test. If you are below 5 then you need to take corrective action and wait 30minutes before testing again. If at all possible i would try and find a suitable public place (like a supermarket, cafe etc) where you can go and sit down while you treat yourself. Apart from the legal aspects of this, you want to avoid someone calling the paramedics as this may mean withdrawal of your licence.
