Relationship to Diabetes

Just got my insurance certificate through the post after renewing my car insurance with same company as last year. It didn't mention that I was type 1 this time, so I rang them up.

They took a note of it and them said the underwriter had amended my policy so I can only drive other cars if I am a named driver due to being on insulin. They have revoked the little extra bit that said I could drive any other car with the owner's consent.

Very rare that I ever drive a vehicle other than my own but I am curious if this has happened to anyone else?

It sounds very much like disability discrimination and is not supposed to be allowed as a general policy but only to individual circumstances (they have to believe you pose an additional risk over a 'normal' person). You could talk to CAB about it or challenge your insurer. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with car insurance due to diabetes.

Noooooo !

They have changed the terms of your insurance without consulting you! They CAN'T DO THAT !

If they want to do it they have to put it in writing, give you a chance to consider it, and if you don't like, move to another company and they must do this without any premium penalty.

Otherwise, it is an 'Unfair Contract Term' and they will be in BIG trouble with the ABI.

Suggest you speak to them and tell them to go knot themselves, or other choice of words for the same thing.
