Hello all. I'm new here so apologies first of all! I'll give you a bit of background 🙂 My name is Catherine, I'm 25 years old and I have severe allergies and intolerances to a lot of foods:

- fruits and vegetables (mostly intolerances to the sugars so can have a bit but will make me feel very sick and unwell for a time, however things like onion can make me 'hospital poorly')
- Oats
- sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol
- wholegrains (it's a fibre issue, very sensitive intestines!)

I can have white goods like bread, rice and pasta. Chicken, fish, dairy, eggs, and nuts.

I have tried and tried to get a dietitian. I originally did have one but once my doctor realised I was being really proactive with my food diary and managing my diet myself he withdrew the dietitian and basically left me to my own devices.

My worry is that I am having a lot of plain rice and carbs and I'm concerned about the impact of these things on my health and specifically developing diabetes in later life. I walk 6 miles a day to get to work (3 there, 3 back) and I currently weigh around 7st 13lbs which I know will be helping me to avoid diabetes but I was wondering if anyone here is managing diabetes with a similar issue or has any advice about what to increase/decrease?

I do try to eat fruits and vegetables when I feel able but they make me so sick it's not very helpful. I will keep on pushing for a dietitian to help me with this but I wanted to put the thread out there in case anyone had a similar experience/thoughts.

Best wishes,

Catherine 🙂

That's not easy is it ? I am pleased you can have Fish & Chicken but I will have to think about that one ? Good luck 🙂

Hi Catherine. It must be very difficult trying to get a good balance to your diet with various intolerances. Is diabetes in your family? Have you ever had a blood test to check your glucose levels? It could be that you don't need to worry about diabetes anyway as you haven't got it. That would mean you can eat the foods you can cope with without worrying. Obviously a good healthy diet is best but you have to work with what your body can cope with. Good luck.

Hiya - I'd worry more that you aren't getting all the trace elements our bodies need to function properly - rather than a future risk of diabetes to be honest ! I dunno what to suggest though - are all your Vit levels OK - do you get regular enough blood tests for all that? (If not, why not - if your GP knows you struggle to eat all sorts of things)

Are you ok with green veg? My understanding may be incorrect but I thought they didn't contain much in the way of sugar?
